Nordic alcohol: Finland drinks most, Iceland least

beerThe Finns drink the most alcohol in the Nordic countries, according to research published by the Finland’s Directorate of Health. According to the research, the Icelanders drink the least alcohol of any Nordic nation.

Until now, the Danes have most often been the booziest Northerners; but things have changed. The latest results show that each Finn drinks 10.4 litres of alcohol per year compared to 10 litres for the Danes. Each Swede drinks around eight litres and the Norwegians and Icelanders roughly six.

The research conducted by the Finnish Directorate of Health does not point to an unusual amount of daytime drinking in Finland; but rather to high consumption in the evenings and at weekends. The recent increase in alcohol consumption is apparently particularly noticeable among the older generation. Deaths from alcohol-related illnesses have increased.

I doubt there is a difference between the Nordic countries’ drinking if they do the survey in Spain for example.

  2. Alfred says:

Finns have serious problems. I say this with plenty of first hand knowledge, having had years of experience with them. They and their government paint a rosy picture of Finland and its people but believe me folks there are reasons why these people drink themselves to death and have such a high suicide rate (and it is not the long winters). After years of knowing Finns up close and personal one tends to pity them – until you get a dose of their arrogant, egotistic and superior attitude. They DO think they are better than you. Don’t be fooled by the quiet humble act! Inside a Finn believes he or she is a genetically and culturally superior being while at the same time suffering with depression, frustration and insecurity. Truly strange and complicated people who attempt to manage image and information flowing from Finland. I am sure that this news article is embarrassing to them.

wow, The Finns’ ArchEnemy is back!

I’d rather prefer to read more posts from SIR EURO rather than you, sir/mr.

I’ll say it again: live here for a while and you’ll regret Finland very soon….ahahah

  4. ryan says:

The statistics would be more interesting if they werent averaging TOTAL AMOUNT COMNSUMED divided by TOTAL POPULATION — because it doesnt really show how much the “drinkers” are drinking… clearly an Icelandic “drinker” drinks more than 6 liters per year. So instead of averaging it out… it should be ranked by the “median” of the amount consumed. Finland would still probably “win” but it would be more telling I think…

  5. Jukka says:

Alfred whatever happened to you here in Finland or with finnish people in general you really need to get over it. I’m starting to get a little worried about your welfare reading your articles. Its not healthy to hold all that anger inside.

    Take care dude

  6. densou says:

well Jukka, I know that feeling because I do the same …. I have a grudge against ‘my Mediterranean fellas’ [where: South of the Alps] not immigrants who treated me like a ordinary guy.

However it’s impossible to negotiate with those villains, they won’t understand anything at all, they use to be not aware (or I’d love to say: ignorant of everything)

Conclusion: I pretend an adequate compensation from them or I’ll start a W A R as payback.

  7. Jorge from SPAIN says:

“I doubt there is a difference between the Nordic countries’ drinking if they do the survey in Spain for example.”

First; men who drink more alcohol in Spain are not the Spaniards but the foreigners: exactly, English and Germans; they burn adrenalin and frustrations, colds and tedious days, in wonderful and sunny Spanish beaches. They are barbarians, uncivilized! They do everything what never would do in their countries. Spanish beaches are pigsty when foreigners have there been: ‘ if you are a civic man in your country and others, you are a well-mannered man; if you are a civic man in your country and a pig in others, you are a PIG. ‘

Second; Spaniards amuse, eat, dance and laugh in beaches, parties; foreigners do only drink. They have a problem; they think that they do what the Mediterranean ones, but they are mistaken, they are not afraid of making a food of themself. They do not understand the healthful and mediterranean life: food, drink, dance, laughter, friendship, work, siesta in summer when 40 degrees say Hello! ; it is recommended by the doctor, 30-45 minutes. I suppose when men and women have everything what can wish, the Nordics, and they live in an isolated, dark, cold, solitary place and full of boredom, all the ghosts go up to around the mind; and, a way to destroy itself is drinking. Love and fewest credit cards; tenderness and familiar affection, less money for electronic things!

As a finnish I can say that that alkohol conumassion in Finland is huge. We do drink a lot, and often missbehave. But to Alfreds comment, do you mean that all finnish people are like that??
Mostly people get us like quiet people, and when we drink alkohol we start talking.
So I can’t understand why you’re saying that we’re arrogant and egoistic?? We must have done a lot of bad to you, when you write like that.
But please, don’t take all the finns in the same boat.
I pity you if you just met finns like that, because we can be and are really open and good people :)

  9. THE NEXT PRESIDENT says:

TARA THAT IS TRUE, FINS CAN BE OPEN AND GOOD PEOPLE. WHEN I WAS STARTING MY UNI. EDUCATION WE HAD A FINISH NEIGHBOR, SHE WAS OPEN AND NICE, MAKING PANNUKAKKU FOR US, SINGING SONGS… BUT ONE NIGHT SHE GOT TERRIBLY DRUNK, GRABBED A HUGE KNIFE, RIPPED HER CLOTHES OFF AND WELL, YOU CAN IMAGINE THE REST… I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT THEY IN MY LIFE. SO YES THE COMBINATION “FINISH, DRINK AND KNIFES” IS A VERY BAD ONE… AND I HAVE HEARD THAT SUCH IS VERY COMMON IN FINLAND…

APART OF THAT I LIKE SAUNA AND FINISH CULTURE…

  10. densou says:

Jorge, it seems that those people confused Spain for Italy :D

  11. Helena Fairgreaves says:

Every man and woman I have ever met from Finland has a drinking problem and I’ve met less than 100 but probably more than 50, between ages of 18 and 70.

I do not find them unbareable but those I have met are a lot more prone to depression and drink related outbursts and other such problems not to mention hangover related weirdness and snappiness. Which most of them seem to kill by opening a can first thing the next day and carrying on drinking.

My observation has been they are closed off and moody until they get the next drink inside them but that is an alcohol thing and an alcoholic thing not a Finnish thing.

  12. Dawson says:

I have a close relationship with finnish people and I have to say that the finnish that I know and the ones that I meet are really HONEST and GOOD PEOPLE, the most honest group I’ve met in my life (and I have to deal with people from a lot of different countries).

Having said that Finnish are also VERY, VERY SHY, when not drunk and can become VIOLENT when they do.
I’ve never seen a place in west Europe where happen as many fights in the Weekend as in Finland.

  13. Simmi says:

I’ll have to disagree that Iceland drinks the least. Well we mostly drink strong alcohol drinks, like “landi” home brewed and very strong and Brennivín. I was thought to drink at 13-14 years of age, at least that’s how it is were I come from.

But I don’t know anything about the other countries.

  14. Alkometer says:

I still think Denmark has the Eurupe record for teen drinking. In Denmark it has become more and more popular to drink wine, some decades ago we almost only drank beer.

    Is it vodka in Finland?

  15. Narkotest says:

    @Alkometer
I guess you right about Denmark. Heavy drinking has become an issue especially among the danish youth. It is not uncommen to see a 13 years old girl or boy drinking alcohol.

Are you experiencing the same type of drinking in your countries?

  16. Seitensprung says:

i Know Hard Alkohol is a Huge Problem for Teens but we was all Young and want to be cool anyone who tried to drink much alkohol has learned after that i think so.
