Social Democrats still Iceland’s biggest party

reykjavik_althingThe Social Democrats are still Iceland’s largest political party, according to the latest Capacent Gallup opinion poll – they command 29 percent support. The Left Green Movement follows with 27 percent and roughly 24 percent of respondents intend to vote for the Independence Party. The final poll results will be announced this evening on behalf of RUV and Morgunbladid, and the election takes place tomorrow.

The way things stand, the Social Democrats would get 19 MPs, and the Left Greens 18 – meaning a combined coalition majority in the 63-seat parliament. The Independence Party would get 15 MPs and the Progressive Party 7. The remaining four seats would be taken by the new Citizens’ Movement.

The final opinion poll results will be broadcast at 18.00 GMT on RUV.

Any smart politician (legal notice – I don’t say “good” but “smart”!) would loose this election and stay in “opposition” as chances for the winner to get out of the sh*t are close to absolute zero. So all blames would stay on the “winners”…

At least almost all Icelanders I know well are not going to vote for any party this time. I’m talking about people over 40 though who remember different “icelands”.

  2. la armada invencible says:

socialist? jajaja Socialist are the terrible to rule a country. They have empoverish any country when they rule. See Spain right now: over 4.000.000 unemployed with Zapatero… and growing. Yes, Icelanders, vote for the Socialist and your country will be sold off after all the debts you will get into.

  3. Ólafur says:

Yes, the current voting apathy is surprising considering the intensity of political engagement just 3 months ago. What a difference a few weeks make.

  4. ThinkAboutIt says:

The percentages may be correct by some polling organization but it’s still laughable how it is being reported. We could just as easily have the headlines ” Race tightens as Independence Party closing in on 3 to 5 percent difference in polls ” But I guess some tend to wear their bias on their sleeves.

  5. Balkanson says:

What about presidential republic without these clowns called MP?

  6. Fisy says:

It is diappointing bias of many contributer here to IceNews. But I guess less hard left people is off working off big debts they have for they nice house and car loans.

As to reality of this election. It should not be hapening this early. End of year would be reaonsalbe.

Social Democrats dont have a plan and Left Green dont have a plan. Independence Party have a plan but we’ll see how people take to it. Other parties insignificant.

    I say:
    “None of the Above”.

Only good thing I have to say of Left Greens at least want to stay out of EU even if it is for crazy reason.

I read this kind of stuff in several press release and it annoy me:

“The conservative Independence Party was toppled in January after public anger at Iceland’s heavy exposure to the global financial crisis.”

    No.

Social Democrat decided to break coalition in opportunistic way and then when it was time to decide on who lead next coalition our President Ólafur Ragnar decide to stick with his long held hard left political belief and appoint Left-Green and Social Democrat in minority coalition.

(Progressive Party that used to be largest party in early parts of 20th Century backed them in minority coalition out of revenge against IP kicking out of coalition in 2007. )

Now thats the truth. Lazy journalists.

  7. ThinkAboutIt says:

100% Fisy….but let’s face it, it seems barely to matter who wins this election. Because unless something amazing happens Iceland is going to be just another member of the United States of Europe; still in debt but being ruled by people with even BIGGER egos and father away with the only knowledge of Iceland being that their college-aged sons went there and partied one weekend. And it will be journalists (Where did all the reporters go?) who led us there. Not that I’m cynical or anything.:)

  8. ThinkAboutIt says:

By the way opinion polls should be outlaw, they only make journalist lazy and people with no thoughts of their our SEEM like they have half a brain.

Most world banking system’s are debt based and usually will bankrupt a country. The USA has problem’s and one should watch a video called “money mechanics” which shows how the bank’s and gov’t are corrupt and bankrupting the taxpayer’s secretly! In Canada the “oh!canadamovie” should be watched because we are headed down the same road and its the world bank and certain key families that are screwing everything up for most of the world!!!!!!!!!!
