Independence Party wants the euro

moneycn_0789Iceland’s Independence Party announced this weekend that they want the government to work on changing Iceland’s currency to the euro. The party wants the government to work on the issue in co-operation with the IMF. The press statement urges that the Independence Party does not support unilateral adoption of the euro.

The Independence Party press release says that the party’s Europe Report can only be considered a progress report due to the short timescale their Europe committee had to work on it.

It is important for the committee to continue its work after the elections with the participation of all political parties and stakeholders, the statement says.

“(The report concludes) that the best option is to commence a closer relationship with the European Union and economic stability could be achieved by taking up the single European currency, the euro.”

Some people would sell their own mother just to get votes! Only desperation brings such a last minute change in policy…..

whats with this idiots? one week before they are all for the Euro, just 2 days ago they blocked a change in the constitution that whit out that change we can not go into de EU, by the way I´m all for the Euro in fact it´s our only chance to survive, but not even under the influence of the heaviset droug would vote for them.

  3. Truth says:

Iceland will never adopt the Euro! Because their national Mafia will loose the control they have. Right now only the fishing companies and the wealthier thieves that brought the country down to it’s knees are benefiting from keeping the krona! FOREIGNES MUST STAY AWAY FROM ICELAND, UNLESS THEY DON’T MIND GETTING RIPPED OFF. ONE MORE THING, STAY AWAY FROM THE KRONA AND ICELANDIC BANKS!!!

  4. Niels says:

So the party that adopted a very unfriendly policy towards the EU, the party that always kept the EU at a distance now all of a sudden wants the euro?
I find it very special to read (in this article) that they want to ‘work on this issue with the IMF” .
If they really want this they should work on it with the EU! The IMF has nothing to say about the euro…

Is anyone here surprised? I am – not at all.
As I said many times before – the only real goal for any politician is to get elected.

If they really want this they should work on it with the EU! The IMF has nothing to say about the euro…

As IMF pays for the “lunch” – Iceland has to “dance” with it first ;-)

  8. SIR EURO (FORMER GUS) says:

TRUTH, YOUR NICKNAME IS WORTH WHAT YOU SAY. WELL DONE BOY!!

THE PROBLEM, IF YOU HAVENT NOTICED YET, IS NOT IF ICELAND WANTS OR NOT TO BE IN EU OR WANTS OR NOT TO TAKE THE EURO. THE QUESTION IS IF EU IS GOING TO LET ICELAND GET INTO THE VIP CLUB…

ICELAND TAKING THE EURO?? HOW?? HAHAHAHA I LAUGH TIL MY STOMACH HURTS…

    SORRY BUT TOO LATE !!

YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT 10 YEARS OR SO!!

WELCOME TO POVERTY, PLEASE GET OVER IT…

NOTHING IS GOING TO FIX THINGS JUST BY ART OF MAGY … GET READY FOR YEARS OF POVERTY TO COME.. AS SOME SAY HERE:

THE SHIP IS SINKING, PLEASE PROCEED TO THE UPPER DESK, CHILDREN AND WOMEN FYRST!

I DON´T THINK THIS NATION IS GOING TO GET ANYWHERE AS LONG AS THEY KEEP WITH THEIR SENSE OF SUPERIORITY AND THEIR IGNORANCE… THIS WORLD IS ABOUT MUTUAL CO-DEPENDENCE… YOU LIKE IT OR NOT, BUT THIS IS A GLOBAL MARKET WHERE EVERYONE NEEDS EVERYONE…

THE TRUTH IS THAT ICELAND IS NOT A PRIORITY FOR EUROPE. EU IS INTERESTED, WELL, MAYBE… BUT EU IS A REAL PRIORITY FOR ICELAND.

I REALLY HOPE EU DONT LET THIS NATION GET INTO THE UNION, AT LEAST NOT UNTIL THEY HAVE WEAPED OUT ALL THE CORRUPTION, AND THEY HAVE POLICIES IN LINE WITH THE EU THAT WORKS FOR RESPECT OF DIVERSITY.

EU MAIN CHARACTERISTIC IS CULTURAL DIVERSITY. AND EU CITIZENS REALLY LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT. EU HAS EVERYTHING AND WE ARE REALLY PROUD ABOUT IT. WE ARE SO CULTURALLY DIVERSE AND RICH. EACH COUNTRY HAS SOMETHING SPECIAL AND UNIQUE TO OFFER AND ALL TOGETHER MAKE OF EU A WONDERFUL PLACE TO LIVE!!

  10. dominik says:

Taking up the Euro in Iceland?
    Yeah, they wish!
Will not fulfill the criteria for the next 10 years. Inflation too high, debt too high, no chance for that to happen soon.
Should have done that like 2 years ago.

  11. C.A.K says:

    Dominik and GUS is right.

It is hard to see any reasons to why any of the EU members would let Iceland join the union. Well OK, Denmark, Sweden and Finland would accept Iceland as a member, hence that is what we do – support each other, but regarding EU, a symbolic gesture from some northern brothers can do nothing.
It is also a bit frightening that Icelanders themselves don’t even seems to take this in account when they talk about the EU membership – as if the present standards for becoming a member is nonexistent for Iceland. Maybe Gus is right, saying: I DON´T THINK THIS NATION IS GOING TO GET ANYWHERE AS LONG AS THEY KEEP WITH THEIR SENSE OF SUPERIORITY AND THEIR IGNORANCE…

  12. densou says:

if they permitted us to remain within EU, how would they disapprove Iceland bid ?

I guess there’ll no trouble unlikely Turkey proposal. (France and Germany opposed)

  13. Physchim62 says:

    Blogged about here.

The Independence Party’s idea depends on asking other people to forget the fact that Iceland borrowed money from them. Pretty much like they tried to do last October, in fact.
