Reykjavik City was awarded a prize by The Association of Town Centre Management (ATCM) for excellent results in the cleaning and renovation of the city centre over the last year, mbl.is reports.
In a statement from the City Council, Mayor Hanna Birna Kristjansdottir said that the prize comes as recognition and encouragement for the city to keep up the good work.
“This prize is important for Reykjavik and a satisfying endorsement of the many projects the city authorities have realised in the city centre over recent years. We must carry on working at this to make our city centre an even better place for residents, tourists and all interested parties,” Kristjansdottir said.
According to the organisation’s website, ATCM is: “Europe’s largest membership organisation dedicated to helping town and city centres realise their natural roles both as prosperous locations for business and investment, and as focal points for vibrant, inclusive communities.”

If only they could get interested in cleaning all the roadway bushes filled with trash, then they might make an impact on the image of the city.
take a 1 minute drive out of “downtown” and all you see is trash filled shrubs and bushes on every corner.
Looks nice when there’s snow but once it melts, it looks like Icelanders throw just about all their trash out of the car window.
What, you have to be joking?
Reykjavik is often full of litter even without the help of windy conditions. I’ve seen people throw stuff right out their car or SUV windows without regard for anything. Not to mention what happens on public sidewalks.
This is clearly election pandering once before April 25th.
Easy, guys.
This just mean that some European bureaucrats found the Reykjavik council’s application for the title the best one. Which in turns means that Reykjavik bureaucrats are much better than their colleagues from other towns. That’s it.
As to most clean downtown – I would say I saw much better ones.
As to “renovation” – sorry, it doesn’t exists here. At least from professional point of view.
So I guess they simply sent all their crazy plans and all kinds of proposals from all kind of hell expensive (but useless) architectural competitions .
There are hundreds of such BS going around – like ” Climate Neutral through Procurement” conference in Reykjavik, run by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. For those English natives folk – what does it mean?
You guys make Iceland sound just awful. I know a young man that lives there from USA… he never complains.
From cursory observation, most Scandanvian countries are more orderly and tidy – less litter strewn – than those in the english speaking World; UK and Canada, from first hand experience.
There is nothing sustainable about local government: producing endless reports, policy documents and strategies on becoming sustainable. Just bloody do it.
