Geir H. Haarde, head of Iceland’s Independence Party and former Prime Minister marked his last appearance in parliament on Wednesday.
Haarde said that he will give up his party position on Sunday and would not be attending the final parliamentary sessions this week due to medical appointments abroad.
Gudbjartur Hannesson, the president of parliament, said that parliament will be dissolved some time next week in time for the elections on 25th April. There is usually at least a month between the dissolution and the election.
Due to the national conferences of both the Independence Party and the Social Democrats this weekend, there will be no meeting of parliament today (Friday).
Haarde described his long years in politics as “a privilege” and thanked his parliamentary colleagues.

I am actually surprised that Haarde is going to the Netherlands for cancer treatment, since medical standards in Belgium and Germany are higher .
As a human being I wish Haarde all luck and hopefully the treatment will be successfull as cancer is a terrible disease.
