The Icelandic government this week decided to increase the number of staff working on the investigating committee into the banking crisis, Frettabladid reports.
Those working for the chief investigator Olafur Thor Hauksson will increase to 20 from the current nine.
The team will use four or five foreign specialists who will work with Eva Joly, the noted international financial investigator.
Ragna Arnadottir, Iceland’s Minister for Justice and Ecclesiastical Affairs said in a press briefing on Tuesday that the cost of the investigation will therefore increase by around ISK 70 million to ISK 170 million. This figure does not include the cost of the foreign investigators.

It looks like the government took Eva Joly’s advice a few weeks ago about the minimum size for the investigating committee. Good stuff – this is what the people want.
Great! If the original 4 (I believe) are already complaining they have not enough to do, what are 20 going to do? By adopting only part of Eva Joly’s recommendations you still won’t get the results that are needed. Now all levies on bank secrets etc should be removed for these investigators working under full confidentiality. As long as that is not done, this is just a waste of money.
Wow, this is a great way to get people back to work in these Kreppa times. Hire everyone as a bank investigator! Where can I apply????
The bankers stole all of the money and the politicians helped them do it. What is there to investigate?
Tey are just telling people what they want to hear. This useles 3rd clas sherif has allready said that there is nothing to prosecute, so what they have to do first is kick this useless guy out of there and put some international neutral investigator, and then hire him the people he needs. But what they are doing is just pretend to do “something” about it, this is just psicological propagand, first they built up a momentum orrownd the Eva Joly name, they create spectation, and make public an iterview with here, the they throw 2 or 3 points that she mentioned and they have highlited fore 2 or 3 weeks, and publish the news , ahh but dont forget to mention the name (eve joly) so people get exited.
This is mass propaganda 101.
when I said publish the news I mean this one of today. I knew they were going to do something like this. They built this up for couple of weeks, so today they throw this news and hope to get credibility and give the people some “trust”.
It was the biggest fraudulent conspiracy the country has ever seen, so the investigation is of course worth the cost of 20 investigators. And once there’s EVIDENCE of fraud, the prosecutions will undoubtedly be filed – it’s a very different political environment now. Hopefully Eva Joly will be heavily involved, but it’s not clear what her responsibilities are in a “special advisor” role. But the biggest success factor could be the state seizing the accounts (possibly held offshore…) of individuals who obtained their monies fraudulently, eg by conspiring with banks to overvalue business assets. Everyone knows what happened; the challenge will be compiling compelling evidence…
There have been talks about giving immunity to people who come foreward with information and return money to Iceland from tax havens like Tortola and Virgin Islands, that means some people are scared they will become outcast like certain busynesmen who would get their asses kicked if seen on the streets here in Iceland,
this is not just about this investigation,
some people are not willing to trade everything for money, those people may possibly shed some light to this pyle of sh*t.
Gylfi Magnússon is working on removing bank secrecy laws,
im sure that Eva joly would not be a part of some play to fool voters, this is for real.
If Eva Joly is unhappy with the progress, she will say so. She is not known for being concerned about pleasing politicians and bearoucrats. If someone wants to use her as a fig leaf, they are in for a world of hurt….
keep om dreaming!!!
