A majority of respondents to a recent Stod 2 and Frettabladid poll were against Iceland applying to join the European Union.
53.9 percent of respondents did not want Iceland to apply, while 46.1 percent were positive towards the idea. A majority of Social Democrat voters (77.5 percent) were pro EU membership application, but other voters were much less positive, mbl.is reports.
Similar polls conducted since the banking crash in October suggested that the country was strongly in favour of EU membership. Read more here.
That is because of what is now termed as ´Kreppa creep´. Kreppa is spreading to EU now.. so why should Iceland have to support Bulgaria and other poor EU countries in these times of Kreppa now and in the future. We all gotta work that kreppa on our own!
These poor EU countries, like Poland, just gave Iceland money to help.
The first job the new Seðlabankastjóri did was to kill the myth of Iceland being able to pick up the Norwegian Króna. Now there are voices that Iceland should pick up the US Dollar asap. Why would the US – or any country – in these crisis times want Iceland to join their currency? At most, Iceland will be able to peg the ISK to another currency, but only when the ISK is fully floated, inflation firmly controlled and account deficits back to reasonable levels. I think it is safe to say that this is going to take a long time.
While the EU is reaching out to Iceland, Iceland should really consider whether it can afford to stay ‘independent’. While stories emerge that EU will fall apart because of the bill that comes with bailing out the new Eastern European member states, if Iceland does not answer these calls from the EU soon, it may become politically very difficult to ascend any time soon.
Now that Icelanders have come out of their shock and learned to accept the reality, it is simply the fear of the unknown combined with a stubborn optimism “we can do it ourselves better” that emerges again. But we just have to face it, Iceland is in many ways not very different from these Eastern European states. If Iceland as a micro-economy wants to survive it needs to be part of a bigger whole. It is for large part already compliant with EU rules and regulations and Iceland is small enough not to be a problem for the EU. EU membership will give Iceland much needed securities in the short term and it will financially be very beneficial in the long term.

I have been following the situation in Iceland very closely for the past few months and I must say that my general impression from dealing with Icelanders is that the majority do not quite appreciate the severity of their situation. Iceland as a nation is not behaving as a bankrupt state. For example hotel prices in Reykjavik for this summer are even more expensive than they were last summer! The principle of demand and supply is one of the most basic economic principles and while prices in the rest of the world have dropped dramatically since last summer, due to a reduction in demand, my general impression is that Icelanders think that both domestic and international demand for their products and services have actually increased. The ISK was still overvalued at 1 USD = 140 ISK and now it’s nearly 25% higher than it was at that point. Nothing has happened in Iceland to justify a 25% increase in the value of ISK and Iceland remains a country in a deep financial crisis. Unless this situation is allowed to reach an equilibrium gradually and freely, there is another major shock coming to the Icelandic economy IMHO.

I was in Iceland in September for tourism and had the time of my life there . I felt really bad about what happened to the country but im sure they will overcome it soon since its human capital is among the best in the world ! I never met so cool , educated , open minded people in my life . As for the Eu , well i don’t think that Iceland will be called to support anyone at the moment since indeed it itself needs all the support it can get but i don’t think that this gives the right to people from Poland or Bulgaria or even Greece to say stuff like ” we support your poor country cause you have nothing ” and stuff . The matter is – WHAT Iceland can get from EU it doesn’t have now? Keeping in mind how much resources for such small country should be allocated to join – I see not a single reason to bother.

Frankly, all these “new members of Europe” were just draining Icelandic resources. People from there come to Iceland to do any job for one reason only – to send money back home. BACK HOME. It’s a big difference – when people come to new place to build that place (like first settlers did in Iceland or first immigrants coming to USA) and when people just come to get easy money.
You might say that fishing factory or construction site is not an easy place. But I doubt people come to Iceland because of its beauty and living easy places in their home countries.
So every month after month people from Poland, Lithuania, Balkans were sending home millions of euros. And what did they gave back? Terrible – I mean it – quality construction work? Spoiled – by “tourist” workers and black cash payments – labor market?
Do you know what reputation people from Lithuania got here and why?
And please – don’t mix Sweden, Norway, Danmark and Finland (Nordic) with Poland, Baltic and Balkan states.
And please- remind me how EU is helping – except sensible suggestions – Iceland. I somehow missed that.

As for Iceland in the EU, hey, I don’t think the EU is terrified of the cost. In absolute terms the Icelandic economy is small – 50 billion euros of external debt compared, say, to France’s 3.6 trillion (and that’s with an economy that hasn’t tanked.
Now if Icelanders don’t want to be in the EU, that’s their decision.

I already said that but if you have reading problems – I’ll repeat. Poland provided “help” in very special way – when Polish people has started to flee Iceland last autumn (one could say – like rats from the troubled ship) they faced the biggest problem – how to transfer their money kept in Icelandic bank back home. So this “help” was in fact a swap deal to “unfreeze” money and let people to wire them to Poland. So Poland helped itself only. Cause Poland is not in the position to help anyone. Even itself.
And part of IMF package – half a billion – was provided by Russia. And believe me – people here appreciate it.
If I don’t send box of candy to you – this doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate help from those who is really helping.
PS. You have never heard stories about tourists from Baltic states for simple reason – they almost don’t travel. And among those few who travel – many speaks Russian.

Actually because the rest of the world is ALSO in a financial mess it is hard to sell fish even at this rate.
With (Bacalao) Salt-cod the foreign buyers mainly mediterranean (Spain ,Italy ,Portugal)
are not given good credit from their banks to buy large stocks so they are ordering in much smaller quantities than in the good times.
It is exactly the same with frozen fish too the buyers mainly U.K, France, Germany etc are only getting bank credit to buy small stocks.
The fresh market is a little better as the fish is perishable and sells on a daily stock basis.
Also because of the hard times the buyers are always now trying to pay less.
When the ISK 75=1 Euro (2006) the fish business was still better because the global ecomony was much better the demand was higher and the buyers paid more.
I myself have higher hopes for the frozen fish market as it is a cheaper product, and as consumers start to shop wiser the demand will grow.
