Katrin Jakobsdotir, Icelandic culture and education minister and Hanna Birna Kristjansdottir, the Mayor of Reykjavik Thursday signed off on the completion of the new National Concert and Conference Centre in Reykjavik.
The local and national governments say they both agree on the importance of completing the project, mbl.is reports.
After several months at a standstill, the half-completed project will get back underway over the coming weeks – albeit at a slower pace and in a money-conscious manner.
The project should cost in the region of ISK 13.3 billion (USD 117,077,000) and will create some 600 jobs, including 200-300 needed on the building site right away. The new plan involves completing the project in January 2011 and opening in the spring (instead of the original December 2009).
The ambitious project’s goals have not changed. They remain to reinvigorate the harbour area, to support the arts, to shine a positive light on the city and on the country and to increase Iceland’s competitive position in attracting and nurturing the world’s best artists, and to further develop the country’s attractiveness to tourists.
