“Muscle” dogs targeted for tracking in Denmark

dog-flyingSeveral groups within Denmark’s parliament are behind a new campaign to require all “muscle” dogs in the country to be specially registered and licensed in a bid to keep track of potentially dangerous animals. Two of the nation’s largest political parties, the Danish People’s Party (DF) and the Social Democrats, have proposed new legislation that will make the registration mandatory.

The proposal will soon be submitted to the Danish parliament for approval. There are thousands of muscle dogs in Denmark that will need to be registered. The Copenhagen Post revealed that the Danish dog resister contains more than 6,000 canines that qualify as muscle dogs, although the Danish Kennel Club believes the actual number may be closer to 20,000. Most of the muscle dogs in Denmark are American bulldogs.

The proposal was brought forward after another mauling incident happened recently in the town of Haderslev. Peter Skaarup, chairman of the parliamentary legal committee, said, “It is a pressing problem that more and more of these dogs are emerging. It’s tempting to extend a ban on these dog breeds, but there’s no denying that it’s the owners who must be educated.”

How ridiculous! What are muscle dogs anyway? Yes, I know that article states American Bulldogs, but correct me if I am wrong, but don’t ALL dogs of ALL breeds have muscles! What a joke. The only intelligent point in this proposal and one that actually negates the mandatory ‘muscle dog registry’ is the fact that Peter Skaarup stated “…but there’s no denying that it’s the owners who must be educated.” Yes, so why not enforce tougher penalties for irresponsible dog owners who are always the people that cause all these problems.

You’re wrong, in that you’re intentionally pretending to not understand the meaning of “muscle dogs”.

Not that I necessarily agree with breed bans, but you do yourself no favours by playing the fool.

  3. It is also possible to “educate” attacking dogs with a few well-placed karate kicks and chokes. See the February 2008 (last year) issue of Black Belt Magazine. See my letter at the front and several articles in the issue dealing with dog attacks. Several owners complained about the articles, but they won’t stop me from returning an attack from a dog.

We also have an argument about breed specific legislation, as you can see from the American Kennel Club’s .com site. Coming from fear due to the narrow focus of media’s demonization of any bully breed incident, BSL is a focus of shelter coalitions who hope to squash such unreasonable legislation as knee-jerk political response to isolated albeit tragic incidents resulting from irresponsible owners. BSL is not part of a strategic public policy.

If the target is dog fighting or puppy mill atrocities, there is legislation coming up that gives real teeth to current laws and would effective shut down the small mills that supply fighting dogs, and provide for dog confiscation under certain provisions.

Police in Chicago are trying to use Pit Bulls, but say they are too friendly and don’t take easily to training that requires a contrary stance toward people.

I’ll be blogging about this topic later today, so when I came across your posts I thought I’d stop, say hello, and see if anyone has some links to direct me to your main sites on this topic.

    Thanks for any guidance…

  5. That just doesn’t seem right to group all “muscle” dogs together. I raise English Bulldogs and they are the most loving and gentle dog you could ever want. Just my opinion though

    the 13 ‘muscle’ dogs are:

    Pitbull Terrier
    Tosa Inu
    Amerikansk Staffordshire Terrier
    Fila Brasileiro
    Dogo Argentino
    American Bulldog
    Boerboel
    Kangal
    Centralasian Ovtcharka
    Kaukasic Ovtcharka
    Southrussian Ovtcharka
    Tornjak
    Sarplanina

I live in Denmark and yes – innocent dogs have been killed. including my best friend.

so now I say it: I HATE THE ROTTEN GOVERNMENT OF DENMARK

What were the circumstances Victoria? Context is everything, although admittedly often not to the one who has suffered the loss.

Dog shouldnot be punished for what they did not chose to be.
