Social Democrat MP in Iceland EU plea

eu-flag“We cannot waste any time in applying for the European Union,” said Arni Pall Arnason, Social Democrat MP in the Icelandic parliament on Thursday. He said that any future government must be ready to completely dissect the machinery of government and lay the groundwork for swift economic recovery.

Arnason said that even though the government has made many good decisions since the fall of the banks, the cabinet’s position only continues to weaken, “The nation senses it – and we do too,” he said. To this end, the the nation expects to hear today whether or not the current coalition government is even to survive at all.

The government has not been clear and open enough, Arnason believes. He said that the future government will have some important decisions to make to avoid Icelandic business bleeding out in the economic crisis. He believes that in addition to wide ranging domestic reforms, the country should not hesitate to apply for EU membership as soon as possible: “It is the very core issue to help us rebuild the economy,” he said.

  1. Vilhjalm Antonsen says:

    One of the main reasons to join the EU is the implicit assumption that the Europeans might forgive some of the debt “owed” to the German banks ($20 billion) and British government from Icesave. After all, the rich countries support the poor ones, so any money the German banks got out of Iceland would come out of the pockets of the German government. But that’s not the way it works. Latvia is in deep trouble and owes a lot of debt, 80% of it to the Swedish banks, in reality the Swedish Central Bank. And what’s Sweden’s response? Screw you Latvia, you pay us our money, we don’t give a rat’s ass if you’re an EU member or not. You can eat dirt.
    So if Iceland joins the EU, there’s no chance of an Argentinian or Ecuadorian-style default, and not much chance of loan-forgiveness. You have to pay every last euro, even if it takes you 100 years. And what about Iceland’s assets in Britain? Well, their value is dropping like a rock, now that Britain has fallen off a cliff.
    I’m not sure that Iceland really has any choice but to join the EU now, since it has virtually no foreign reserves (or will have none within a year) and is dependent on the IMF and the Europeans for survival.

    No it does’nt

    Any money paid out does not come out of the pocket of the German or British goverment, it comes out of the pocket of the German or British taxpayer,and why should these taxpayers be responsible for debts obtained by Icelandic Goverment theft?

  3. Axel says:

    Iceland will not join the EU, the next government will be Social Democrat/left green and the left green are against EU, IMF, NATO, etc and are extreamly inviromentaly friendly, they will probably win the elections in may by a landslide, LG are determined to preserve all our resources and make sure they will be owned by the Icelandic nation,
    they are talking about changing the whole system to avoid corruption,
    its possible that we will be able to recover some of the money who has been stolen by nationalizing property of “billioners” who where one way or another robbing us,

  4. Fisy says:

    >they are talking about changing the whole system to avoid corruption,

    Really can you give us analyss their detailed plans please. How exactly they will do that?

    Robbing who exactly? I hope you use standard of court of law here not some loose idea.

    I say Axel that you are a criminal and you have robbed from me. Give me what you have.

    Now I use same standard proof that you have.

    And BTW if there is any this nationalisation stuff, kiss goodbye to any foreign investment for the next 5 years. Within 2 years of this peopel will be out on streets demanding new elections.

    Presendent already set.

  5. U.S. Citizen says:

    Iceland, Pay attention for a moment. You want to save your country? Here is how you can do it. PRINT YOUR OWN CURRENCY. Yes. It is that simple. Stop acepting money from other nations and banks and that includes the IMF also. Just look into my counries past. Look into the federal reserve act of 1913 on line. Our past American President Abraham Lincoln understood the problem and began alouwing our government to print it’s own money a.k.a. “greenbacks”. thats why he was assaninated. It is strongly believed that is why President Kennedy was also assanatied. The owners and share holders of the worlds cenral banks don’t want countries to print there own moneies else wise, the People like the Rothshilds and Rockafellers would be out of buissness and out of control of the worlds governments.

  6. U.S. Citizen says:

    Iceland. The one thing you need to understand. Rioting really wont do a hole lot people. If you want the governments attention, you need to speak their language. Money. Rioting just gets people hurt and killed. But when you have a hold of the money problem in hand, you have the nations balls in hand. When you control the nations money, you control the nation, and it’s leaders as well. No money, no power. It really is just that simple. Think about it.

  11. Niels says:

    @Axel
    Your idea of recovering money from the billionaires is not bad at all. In Holland we actually have such a law. Criminals can be brought to court where they are forced to prove that they obtained their possessions in a legal manner. If they are unable to do so the possessions are confiscated.
    This law is quite successfull against drug dealers, guys without education or a job who still manage to drive around in huge cars: lots of these cars are confiscated and sold publicly.
    Last year some 50 mil euro was recoverd like this. Still not much compared to the total size of the ‘black economy’ but a good start.
    However the problem with these icelandic billionaires is the fact that most of their wealth will be abroad (in swiss bank accounts) and it will not be easy to get enough evidence to convict them in court.

  12. from Delaware says:

    US Citizen:
    There is one problem with your first statement. Unlike the US (even in 1862), Iceland relies on imports of non-fish products. Printing more money would simply devalue the currency further (or cause more inflation).

    I have no idea where you learned of a “world central bank” (unless you mean every country’s central bank, e.g., Danmarks Nationalbank, Sveriges Riksbank, Eesti Pank). Those central banks are controlled by the government.

    President Abraham Lincoln only indirectly allowed the printing of greenbacks by signing the Legal Tender Act (1862), which Congress created. The law itself was only created to allow the government to acquire money for the war. Specie (gold/silver) was in short supply, which led to the creation of the greenbacks, or “easy money.” The value of the greenbacks, which were not backed by gold (as with all major currencies today), depended on confidence in the government issuing it. Thus, the North only had inflation of 80% by the end of the war whie the south had an inflation rate of over 9000%.

    If President Lincoln was assassinated for authorizing the issue of greenbacks, why did it occur in 1865, after the war had ended? And why was he killed by a southerner? And if it was a southerner, why didn’t the southerner kill someone in the Confederate government, whose monetary policy caused far worse inflation than the north?

    Yes, we have something like that in the U.S. as well. But I don’t think it has much of any real impact on the criminals here though.

  15. U.S. Citizen says:

    Fishy boy I was borned and rasied here, by american parents. Though my spelling may have a few errors, I was never a major in english. Science was and IS my major. You appear to be some kind of mythologist. Some one that spouts opinion only. I have no intrest in your OPINIONS. You make assumptions. I am not a consperitor. That involves more then one. I am not spouting theories. I am stateing FACTS. Facts that ANYONE can find and study, something you apparently do NOT do. If you did, you would know better then to be here spouting your opinions like as if they could be found somewhere as facts. Just for your own information, I do NOT give into conspiracy theories. In fact I am VARY hard to convence of anything, theory or fact untill it has been PROVEN to me with FACTS to back it up. I guess you also do not read eather, because you seem to have missed my earlier post that stated, “btw fishy, there NOT MY ideas. there facts found by OTHERS whom have a better education then you.” Did you get the part that stated “OTHER PEOPLE”. I don’t invent this stuff. The college and university instructors at harvard and yale and other schools do. People that know more then I do. I suppose that your so vain as to believe that you know more then anyone else? I also notice that your posts seem to be here simply to discredit other posters’ intellectual values, and not to give one something to think about. Today is my first day posting here, and I noticed you wasted no time to be ignorant and start in on insulting me or my posts. You don’t even know me. Have you nothing better to do with your time then to insult people on line? It would appear that your public manners are lacking. If you want respect, earn it. You can earn it, by giving it. If your going to do it, do it, and do it right the first time, or just do us all a favour, and just don’t do anything at all. Just keep your discombobulated idiosyncronistic misconstruded opionionations to yourself. Thank you.

  16. U.S. Citizen says:

    @ Delaware,

    That is intresting what you posted. You do bring up some intresting points. especially the last one. I do like that one. That one sounds like a question I would of asked myself too. I have to look into that some more. Thanks. But I must say, one has never stated who the southerner was working for or for what offilation he was working for eather. If you could find some info on that, I would surly welcome the intell. Thanks.

Most people here (including myself) are non-anglophones (of whom it can be expected to misspell occasionally), yet you, claiming to be a native english-speaker, make mistake after mistake, which doesn`t look all that intelligent, to say the least. Just to give you a hint, there is a difference between “there” and “they`re”. Come to think of it, I doubt it whether you are who you claim you are, aren`t you a teenage icelander, “U.S. citizen”?

    @ Fishy,

    Fishy, perhaps I am being a little raw with you. But some one asked me why I was attacking you earlier. Today was my fist day here and I posted once, then the next post was you attacking me and my post with your childish name calling. Needless to say, that was rude. Perhaps I should enlighten you a bit. 20 miles away from my home, I have a nazi style death camp posted by F.E.M.A. I have Police wareing shirt patches with the N.W.O. logo on them carring military weapons and garb on. I have/had now a president ready to instate Marshal Law, which is already in effect in the State of Arkansas, I’ve seen thousands of plastic pre-made caskets in the State of Georgia, and a stone statue in Georgia with the statement carved in the top sentance that the objective of the N.W.O. is to reduce the world population down to 500, million and keep it at/below that number with population control. I have read the U.S. governments papers called the “Garden Plot”, agreeing with this, and most of the execitive orders that gives the president the power to execute this project. University professers have explained how the shadow governments financially control the leaders of the world and there governments in Documentaries on the History channel and on the Discovery channel and on line documents anyone can look up. I have seen the 20,000 U.S. soilders to be deployed on U.S. soil to govern and control the U.S. public, which I might add is Illeagal to do. We have 10,000 U.S. soilders awal and ready to fight them here. China has 20,000 troops on the other side of the Mexican border ready to invade the U.S. and we have Russian and british troops and material already here on U.S. soil ready to help F.E.M.A. in this effort. I have SEEN this with my OWN two eyes. This is not theory. This is not just in America eather. People better snap out of there denial states and get with the program. This is knocking on our doors NOW. So, I hope you can understand, I have a rather unique perspective on this matter when I have to look at it everyday I leave my house. I hope you can understand why your conspiracy theory name calling is insulting. I KNOW whats going on. I don’t just THINK that it is going on. I can see and touch it, everyday. Please do not read some government controled newspapers or T.V. and insult me with a label to imply that I’m a nut. Btw, if you have one of the new DTV’s, you might want to remove the little camera located near the remote senser on it. I already removed the one on mine. There in the converter boxes as well I noticed on a friend of mines box. So, all in all, I’ll draw a truce with you here. I’ll no longer respond to your posts if they are sarcastic.

  22. from Delaware says:

    @U.S. Citizen
    Yes, that is an interesting article, I remember reading about the Berkshares in the Wall Street Journal not too long ago. The ideas of some people are quite interesting. A small village in Thailand also did something similar to this. It appears to work well when “backed” 100% by something (usually the country’s currency), or when the majority of trading goes on within the area the money circulates. Of course, these “local currencies” are virtually worthless outside of the area intended for their use.

    As to your comment about rioting, I too think it is not a very good idea. People need to stop, and think about what they are doing. Though I also agree that the Icelandic government’s moves since September haven’t necessarily been the best, rioting doesn’t bring progress, and it doesn’t help anything. Every moment spent rioting is a moment that could have bee spent doing something that is constructive. A well-written, thought-out letter or petition can accomplish more than riots/protests can. For one thing, discussion and understanding comes more easily from the former than the latter.
    Hopefully, the protests/riots will end after the election, and will not start again if another crisis occurs during the rest of this year.*
    I can only imagine what a protest of the same magnitude occured here (in the US)…

    *I’m not implying that the Icelandic government is not to blame for this crisis (nor the other way around either, it is a very complex situation), but it seems that the ruling government tends to get ousted or at least blamed in times of economic problems. But many times, it is a combination of factors that start a long time before crisis strikes, and almost everyone can be blamed. But sending blame around does nothing, only action to fix it will. Again, I’m not intending to say the current governments around the world are not to blame for this global crisis, but I just wanted to put forth a rarely heard viewpoint.

    Off-topic: I think there are two people with “fish”-related names: “fishy” and “fisy”. I can’t find the comment where “fishy” confirmed that though (if fishy did).

  23. U.S. Citizen says:

    @jan.

    Are you another attacker of posters here also. Nothing better to do but look for something to attack some one about. I am an AMERICA. Now if you have nothing better to do with your time then do insult people about little matters and typo’s then go srew yourself back in your own country.

  24. U.S. Citizen says:

    @ Delaware.

    Yes, I agree with you. I think if people just calmed down a little and thought things out a bit, they would probably get a lot further for sure. I thought you might like thoughs articals. I didn’t hear about the one in Thailand though. I thought that was just an American trend or something. I must look that up too. Thanks for the info though. As for the two names “Fishy” and “Fisy”, I saw that too somewhere here. I think Fishy made a point to that on one of his posts earlier. I been barking at Fishy a while today about friction between him and me, right after his first attack after my first post on this site. But I decided it’s not worth barking about no more. Now it would seem I have another one barking at me and trying to criticize my spelling too. Shes from Amsterdam. I’m sure she would know an american for sure. hee hee. I guess not. What ever. There not important anyways. I do hope you enjoyed the links.

  25. U.S. Citizen says:

  26. jan says:

    @U.S. Citizen

    Thank you for the suggestion to go “srew” [sic] myself. I know there`s a difference between being English and American, nonetheless both peoples are anglophone and the mistakes you make have got nothing to do with the differences in spelling between UK and USA English.
    You might think I shouldn`t “bitch” on your spelling capacities, but if a person (who claims English as his mother tongue) is only capable of spelling like a young child, it`s only natural that people will question your intelligence.
    My Dutch 14 year-old cousin makes less mistakes than you do. Is the educational system in the U.S. such a disaster that normal people have become incapable of writing a correct English sentence?
    I can`t believe it`s that bad. So therefore you are either a person of (severely) limited intelligence or, as I still believe, someone who claims to be an American, but clearly is not.

    Sincerely,

    Jan

    Political patronage part of representative politics. Agree that moving power away from centralization is solution, more like Swiss.

    Taking power from executive power to more local control from centralized reduce this completely. History of Icelandic nation is one of no executive power just post 1944 constitution gives too much centralised state power.

    Manipulating stock prices. Yes, crime. If proven.

    Taking loans without guarantee, that is not robbery. That is bad risk managment. If loans not paid back that is bankcrupcy and criminal charge.

    I do not doubt that will find interesting tax avoidings too but far less bad actions than is bandied around as facts. Facts are not as spectaculer as made out. Only thing is large credt lines of one individual and his group.

    This strange idea you have of missing pot of gold in billions? Monies are in bought assets or frozen in UK and other places.

    Do you not support then law suit against UK gov of now Brown about Kauthphing?

  39. Easy says:

    @Fishy
    One again after this post , you are simply retarded, and you must be one of the criminal that screw the nation or a very close relative.

  40. Niels says:

    @Easy,
    aren’t you confusing Fishy and Fisy?

  41. GUS says:

    JAN, YEAH, GO AND TEACH ENGLISH GRAMMAR SOMEWHERE ELSE, AS FOR US IS NOT A MATTER OF PRIORITY RIGHT HERE AND NOW. MOST OF THE GRAMMAR/SPELLING MISTAKES ARE DONE BECAUSE OF TYPING MISTAKES.

    EASY, YOU ARE BY THE SIDE OF THE PEOPLE, THE TRUTH, JUSTICE AND DEMOCRACY. THAT MAKES A GREAT PERSON OF YOU, EVEN IF YOU SAY SOME BULLSHIT HERE AND THEN.

    YOU ALSO LIKE TO KEEP IN LINE WITH THE ARTICLES. WITHOUT PEOPLE LIKE YOU THIS FORUM WOULD BE JUST A CHAOS…

  42. Starlington says:

    LOL @ Gus …true that/…”Easy” is on the side of the people, but fisy keeps pouting endlessly without bringing / suggesting any solution to the problem of Iceland; and before you know it, he is attacking someone.

    I’m laughing my head off @ fisy acting as if he knows it all.

  43. Fisy says:

    Sweet guys, you don’t really have much response to my posts so you call names.

    All I do is read and observe and tell it how it is.

    Particualrly dont like the truth about reality of Left-Greens and Socialist Democrats being said do you?

    Because you know it’s so obviously clearly true.

  44. Easy says:

    @Niels.
    I belive they are one and the same, but he is so good in spelling that sometimes he forgets the “h#

    @Gus
    Cheers to you too, we dont get along very well in some points about the gaza conflict but in general togahter with Niels, you are some of the few that really bring something to the table.

    Today anfd tomorrow the interest on the bonds are due still the krona got stronger, wow its just magic, i guess the foriners who own that money decided to reinvest it in this stable economy and well handeled nation. It was all a bad dream you negative people. (sarcastic again fishy)

  45. Easy says:

    Before fishy comes with some absurd theory, the interest of the bonds are not subject tho the currency restrictions that are in place. so it is clear thet the central bank is injecting all that money to the krona, or well get ready for tomorrow or next week haveing a 170-175 to the euro krona again.

  46. Fisy says:

    >Today anfd tomorrow the interest on the bonds are due still the krona got stronger, wow its just magic, i guess the foriners who own that money decided to reinvest it in this stable economy and well handeled nation.

    They have too. They can’t take main part of funds out of country only interest. No doubt clever ones figured out how to get money out indicrectly.

    That was actually intelligenct observation Easy.

  47. Easy says:

    So people go and buy a plane ticket (cheapest just one way)and buy as many euros as you can before it goes up again. honest advise, fishy you too dont be stupid.

  48. GUS says:

    WE ALL KNOW WHO FISY-FISHY IS…

    A RETROGRADE ?

  49. Jo says:

    Iceland is set to appoint the world’s first openly gay woman as interim prime minister – a former flight attendant who rose through the political ranks to become a cabinet minister.

  50. Easy says:

    No they can not take the investment but they can take the interests, and our economy is so weak that even takeing that would and will set the krona about 30K back, unless the central bank is useing the reserves money just like they did in December to strengthen the Krona or shall i say help it not crumbble.

  51. Fisy says:

  52. GUS says:

    NO FISY, THE TRUE WE DON´T LIKE IS THE CRUDE REALITY OF ICELAND TODAY THANKS TO YOUR MAFIA-PARTY!!!

  53. Fisy says:

    Did I give mafia theme party? Not aware of holding such party.

  54. Starlington says:

    @Jo…..If Iceland is set to appoint the world’s first openly gay woman as interim prime minister – a former flight attendant who rose through the political ranks to become a cabinet minister is not really a thing to worry about. Save your Strength!!…..What has sexuality got to do with Iceland’s economic recovery??…her predecessors aren’t gay(s) , and what was their out come when they ruled??…and besides she will only be there as interim PM, so don’t sweat the petty stuff.
