Geir H. Haarde, the Icelandic Prime Minister, said at the end of a parliamentary debate on economics, that all deposits with the three nationalised banks are insured. Rumours that something unnatural is going on in the banks are simply preposterous, and none of the new banks are going to go under, he assured MPs.
Haarde said that Icelanders are not taking on more debt than they can realistically handle. He said that Iceland’s long-term prospects are bight and that Icelanders all have to work together to rebuild the country’s economy.
“It will get better; I have no doubts about that. We Icelanders have to do our very best to resolve the situation,” Haarde said.

Well, it will be fine until the IMF money runs out and the currency has to float. Then there will be massive currency flight and the ISK will collapse.

Geir may believe that every thing is ok in the banks but nothing has changed, the same people are still in the Central bank and FME, no one knows what is going on in the 3 banks, we get news about some shady busyness in KB involving a Emir from Quatar to false share prices and news about Glitnir giving money to a company called Stím that in return bought shares in Glitnir and FL group to increase share value, i personaly lost money on that scam, im not even going to talk about Landsbanki,

How ignorant can people be, what they are doing with the krona is simply not possible, the rate that they are holding up is simply because the central bank is injecting money into it, is plain and simple. even if they tell you that they are not doing it, if they tell you that elephans fly would you belibe it? NO, because its not possible, or would you? now I have my doubts… anyways just in the month of December the centralbank injected half a BILLION dollars to the Icelandic krona just to keep it at the 160-170 fake rate that we have, if they didnt the krona would be 200 now, so from 3 billon it went down to 2.5 Billion, now at the end of this mont they have to pay the interest if the bonds, and they will have to inject another Half a BILLION or more again so it wont jump to 200 or more, you see, use your brain, for how long can they keep it, if at the end of this mond ther will be ONLY 2 billion inthe national reserves, do the math if you cant use a calculator, this fake krona offcourse is good for us now, but they can only keep it for 2 or 3 more months before we run out of money, so national bancrupcy, take the money from the pension funds and thats all, what happen in sept.-Oct. is nothing but nothing compare to what will come in about 2 or 3 months, so start saveing your money or get ready to eat only rice very often. Now this billions I’m talking about are according to this fake icelandic rate but the real rate that the cb has to pay is actually double, so do the math how much money is actually left (like 1 billon)

There is one thing i have learnt when things go wrong then if you learn from those problems then you will come back stronger, the world monotary fund(sorry if its incorrectr spelling) expects that the wealth of the world will treble in the next 20 years, so the future is bright and while the situation at the moment is bleak we must not dwell in yesterday, today is a problem and we must look forward to the future, i dont see why these protest are doing any good, yes a voice is being heard and are they really doing any good, Iceland will bounce back even stronger that is for sure

Personally as my country and others has used a lof of money to try to make the krona more stable, I dont´t want these money to be lost by new speculators. Most people just wants to know the price when they change currency and buy things and services.
It is not easy, there must be regulations on saleris, pricestops and other control mechanism. 4 days week and other policies may be established.
I know economists don´t like this in a free marked, but there is no normal situation anywhere at the time.
Iceland is a small country/population. 300 000 people with resources like Iceland should be able to work this out. Infrastructure, houses and homes,food, water and energy is OK. They have a good understanding of a welfare model. They need to get a solution on the national debt, but inividuals are free to work.
Tourism may expand, the crisis have given new focus on this jewel in the Atlantic ocean, and the world is bigger than Europe.
The first job the new government should do is to get a deal with other involved countries about the the debt/situation, and then start with the easiest partners – try to get rid of as much as possible. Most of the money are still floating around.
Use money on the youth, let it be possible to buy a home at relativly young age. The wisest policy in Norway has been that people own their own homes.
Iceland should also have had a second larger region which could fight more against Reykjavik – Akureyri is a bit to small – it should have had at least 40 000. Perhaps a possible comming Oil/Gas industry can help?

IN SPAIN YOU DON´T PAY EACH TIME YOU GO TO THE DOCTOR AND MEDICINES ARE COVERED IN MOST OF THE CASES UP TO 80% BY THE STATE. IN ICELAND YOU HAVE TO PAY AND IT IS NOT CHEAP. AND DEPENDING OF THE SPECIALIST YOU CAN PAY FROM 2000 UP TO DOZENS OF THOUSANDS… IS THAT PUBLIC HEALTH, IS IT WELFARE?? PEOPLE HERE HAVE TO PAY FULL PRICE FOR MEDICINES, NO HELP FROM THE STATE.

Krona cannot be floated now; it is not the right time!
Strategy of the Central Bank: Central Bank wants an inflation with two summits of mountain: first top would be reached in January-February-March 2009. It is necessary to knock down the inflation, first top, supporting artificially the Krona. As soon as the inflation falls, next months, if artificially they support the Krona, they could devaluate when inflation reaches lower level; then, it would be the right time to float the Krona: inflation would shoot again but, it would not be an accumulation process on previous inflation but we would see second top of the inflation, of the mountain. Thus there would be two tops of inflation, two mountain tops! If Krona was floated now, without knocking down the PRESENT inflation previously, inflation would shoot up awfully and interest rate could not be cut, for many years! Terrible situation for the Icelanders.

Interest rate cannot be cut 18% to 4% because inflation has not fallen, and REAL interest rate must be over inflation: who would invest in Icelandic Krona at 4, 5 or 6% and inflation at 18% ? Something ridiculous; we would have negative real interest: something absurd. Who would invest? A stupid. Would you place a million of Kronas at 4%-5% in an Icelandic bank and inflation at 18% ? You would lose money every year! Krona cannot be floated if, previously, first top of the inflation does not fall and, cannot be knocked down the inflation if interest rate is cut. If Krona floats and interest rate is cut without knocking down inflation previously, prices will be rising higher and higher, and higher and higher inflation again: process would get worse and situation would become oversized!

There is one thing i have learnt when things go wrong then if you learn from those problems then you will come back stronger, the world monotary fund(sorry if its incorrectr spelling) expects that the wealth of the world will treble in the next 20 years, so the future is bright and while the situation at the moment is bleak we must not dwell in yesterday, today is a problem and we must look forward to the future, i dont see why these protest are doing any good, yes a voice is being heard and are they really doing any good, Iceland will bounce back even stronger that is for sure
but its going to get a little more difficult for a while and in 5 years every one will be sat in cafe paris talking over coffee about these days and smiling knowing that they are in the past

for like 5 years i been telling Icelandics who where complaining about everything and letting the powers that be walk over them to go and protest and they never did a thing i saw that the bubble was going to burst along time ago like many others did but nobody listened, are these protest going to change anything i doubt it because the protesters dont know what to do any way and the new goverment will not know what to do too, but are the protest doing any good, is it really doing any good, The prime minister is still in and remember it was his party that brought Iceland out of where they was in the begining and helped get the country a little more richer, and gave many poeple a chance to make money, guess what the icelanders are at fault too for taking too many loans in the first place, all trying to look rich and impress poeple they didnt like while being maxed out on credit and over drafts,

I for one (as many others) have been a big critic of GUS from the start, as i agree with you that he’s always contradicting himself.
HOWEVER….. My theory is now is that GUS posts here very often and if i AGREE with 20% of what he posts ( you after admit he raises some very good issues)The other 80% i enjoy for entertainment value!
GUS provokes thought in people,
And i think thats a good thing.
As often the replies to his posts (as yours) give us all better answers.
So i now TRY not to fight with GUS but respect the 20% of sense he makes to me!
Also for whatever reason he uses the CAPS LOCK key (he claims dyslexia) for me i don’t find any problem to read his posts.

I can understand your irritation about the fact that few people reply to positive news (let’s regard the stepping down of the icelandic gov as positive news too), but you know, people are always more attracted to bad news than to good news.
Chill out, i know that most icelanders are honest and respectable people. new elections might give you the opportunity to clean up this elite , this clique around Oddson who has been controlling all aspects of economic life in Iceland.
And I must say that the posts of Gus very much encouraged me to start reading this forum.
Regarding Haarde, I hope he will recover. Cancer is a terrible disease, but he s@cks as a poltitician.
