A special open meeting held by the Reykjavik section of the Social Democrats last night in the National Theatre basement attracted hundreds of people and national attention as it became clear the Section would recommend the party disengage from the current coalition government partnership with the Independence Party.
With hundreds of protesters outside chanting slogans and making bonfires, the hundreds of attendees inside came to the conclusion that the party should leave the government and effectively force new elections.
As the news filtered outside, the protesters’ mood lifted, and something of a carnival atmosphere prevailed for a time.
As the largest and most influential section of the party, Reykjavik is very powerful; but the recommendation remains just that for the time being.
The party will discuss its options today and it is not yet possible to say whether the party as a whole will agree to dissolve the government.
More details as they come.

I think they should hold an election to decide whether to hold early elections.
“the party should leave the government and effectively force new elections”
They must be responsible for what their did (ruined Iceland) as part of this government. We are not that stupid.
KARL, WAKE UP HONEY!! IT IS ALREADY 12 O’CLOCK IN THE MORNING!!
THEY HAVE ALREADY DONE THE VOTE AND DENIED THE EARLY ELECTIONS. THAT IS WHY THE PARTY IN POWER HAS MORE VOTES. BUT THE THING NOW IS THAT ICELANDERS ARE NOT WITH THEM ANYMORE, BUT AGAINST THEM. SO THIS IS A FICTICIOUS DEMOCRACY THAT IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE ANYMORE AND THAT´S IT. WE WANT THEM OUT AND NOW!!
Hello from Latvia! At the Latvia people prrtost to the govralment- foto/ video reoport- http://www.autonews.lv/news/6/2221
Most governments have the support of under half the population at some point during their term in office – that is usually the result of unpopular mid-term policies. But it doesn’t make those ficticious democracies! There needs to be a vote of no confidence in parliament or, more likely, the Social Democrats to withdraw from the coalition. Rules and procedures should be followed, not anarchy, especially in these uncertain times. But those rules wouldn’t, for example, preclude Haarde from dismissing Oddsson.
Get them out
Crush the central bank and hang the bankster gangsters
Build a gallows in the centre of Reykjavik and hang the traitors

Said well. Rule by thugs go to hell. We live in a civil society.

It is this kind of political opportunism that makes people crazy and sinks support for political parties.
These opportunismists seem to forget things like their minister (of Ministry of Business Affairs) Björgvin is one accused of lying to the British government about Landsbanki, that they joined with the Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn willingly in 2007 knowing exactly what that meant.
At least Ingibjörg Sólrún showed some principals by exluding such action a month or two ago.
There must be somthing in the sparkling water these Reykjavík politicans drink, or is drunk because of all the centralised power they wield.
Have they learned nothing from that council musical chairs with four Mayors in just two years for Reykjavík?
Those politicians that do their work like this should move to Italy. Its ridicolous.
You are right,Olafur…..the biggest mistake would be to let The Fleece Revolution descend into anarchy…and there are some troubling hints of that starting, courtesy of the rent-a-mob hangers on.
The issue that concerns many people is that the Government has missed several golden opportunities to garner public goodwill by cleaning up its own act.If they would even commence that internal cleansing process, then there could perhaps be some forgiveness…..just maybe. That they have not seized this chance, merely adds “stupidity” to the long list of charges already against them.
We are wasting our breath,I fear.
Perhaps anarchy IS the solution…..nothing else appears to be working.
ÓLAFUR, THIS GOVERMENT OF MAFIA IS THE FIRST ONE WHO HAS BROKEN THE RULES AND AVOIDED TO FOLLOW THE PROCEDURES.
THIS IS NOT ANARCHY, THIS IS THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE OF ICELAND.
PEOPLE KNOW WHAT THEY WANT…
LETS HANG THE TRAITORS

Where is this ideas from these new force people?
Long on rant, long on creating environement of “direct action” where thuggery is if not encouraged is result. Short on what should come next and basic civilness.
Also Gus has recently comes close to criminal incitingness, beware IceNews as you do moderate every post.
I AM NOT COMING CLOSE TO ANY CRIMINALITY. THE ESTATE IS BASED ON LAW AND RIGHTS. CITIZEN EQUITY AND DEMOCRACY.
BUT SOME SOCIETIES AT CERTAIN POINTS OF HISTORY ARE BETRAYED FOR THOSE IN POWER. CRIMINALS THA ABUSE OF THEIR POWER AND FORGET ABOUT THEIR RESPONSIBILITY WITH THE NATION. THEY SERVE PARTICULAR INTERESTS AND IN SOME CASES A MAFIA IS WORKING WHERE A DEMOCRATIC GOVERN SHOULD EXIST.
THE WORST CASE SCENARIO IS WHEN THE MAFIA ALSO TRIES TO KEEP IN POWER BY NOT LISTENING TO THE PEOPLE AND BY USING THE FORCES OF SECURITY OF THE STATE THAT THEY CONTROL.
THEN THE CITIZENS HAVE ONLY ONE OPTION LEFT. AND THAT OPTION IS TO FIGHT ALL THE WAY UNTIL THEY HAVE RECOVERED THEIR RIGHTS.
THIS REVOLUTION IS TOTALLY NECESSARY AND IT IS TOTALLY SOVEREIGN AS IT IS A REVOLUTION COMING FROM THE WIDE MAJORITY OF THE ICELANDERS IN ALL THE COUNTRY.
THIS IS NOT CRIME, THIS IS JUSTICE, FREEDOM AND FIGHT TO FREE US FROM EXPLOITATION AND ABUSE OF THIS CORRUPTED GOVERNMENT.
MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON THOSE CRIMINALS BECAUSE WE WONT.
Guys,
Ditch the E.U., and have a referendum to become a Canadian province. Join our team and we’ll treat you guys right. I’m from Quebec and we come from Normandy, so we both have viking roots, and it would be much more autonomy and less asphyxiating for you guys to be with us then with the E.U.!
Think about it!

The best idea i have heard for a very long time.
Iceland. The one thing you need to understand. Rioting really wont do a hole lot people. If you want the governments attention, you need to speak their language. Money. Rioting just gets people hurt and killed. But when you have a hold of the money problem in hand, you have the nations balls in hand. When you control the nations money, you control the nation, and it’s leaders as well. No money, no power. It really is just that simple. Think about it.

What a bunch of rubbish!! On another forum you advocate that the USA annexes Canada because is a bad entity and here you come to preach the wonders of Canada?
Europe might not be perfect but they don’t have to deal with the extortion that canada has to deal with with people who keep on having referendums and oppressing linguistic minorities!!
