The Independence Party, Iceland’s main ruling party, gave its clearest indication yet on Thursday that it expects an early election to be held this year following anti-government protests over the handling of the financial crisis.
Prime Minister and party head Geir H. Haarde Wednesday refused to rule out elections next winter.
But Reuters reports the party’s deputy leader Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir told parliament on Thursday: “The Independent Party realises that there will be elections this year”.
Meanwhile, protesters and opposition parties continue to insist that elections should be held this spring.
Elections would not normally be held until 2011.
