Today, world markets are down. The dollar gains strength against the Euro, the Pound and other currencies. Yet the Ikr gains about 4% in the same period. Are the protests goading the Central Bank into reckless intervention or is the Ikr ready for a true float?

@Fisy
How ignorant can you be, what they are doing with the krona is simply not possible, the rate that they are holding up is simply because the central bank is puting money into it, is plain and simple. even if they tell you that they are not doing, if they tell you that elephans fly would you belibe it? NO because its not possible, or would you? now I have my doubts... anyways just in the month of December the sentralbank injected half a BILLION dollars to the Icelandic krona just to keep it at the 160-170 fake rate that we have, if they didnt the krona would be 200 now, so from 3 billon it went down to 2.5 Billion, now at the end of this mont they have to pay the interest if the bonds, and they will have to inject another Half a BILLION or more again so it wont jump to 200 or more, you see, use your brain, for how long can they keep it, if at the end of this mond ther will be ONLY 2 billion inthe national reserves, do the math if you cant use a calculator, this fake krona offcourse is good for us now, but they can only keep it for 2 or 3 more months before we run out of money, so national bancrupcy, take the money from the pension funds and thats all, what happen in sept.-Oct. is nothing but nothing compare to what will come in about 2 or 3 months, so start saveing your money or get ready to eat onli rice very often.

Fishy, so they are not spending IMF money, they are screwing the foreign investors in the icelandic bonds.

Wow, what a novel concept. I have to say though, I am surprised that it is even remotely possible. Then the next shock will be when there will be no takers for icelandic bonds in the next round.

Who is getting screwed short term is banks whos bonds came due recently.

http://sedlabanki.is/?PageID=287&NewsID=2016
"06.01.2009
Foreign exchange transactions by the Central Bank of Iceland
Since the interbank foreign exchange market was reinstated, [1] the Central Bank of Iceland has significantly reduced its foreign exchange trading. During the period from December 4 through December 31, the Bank sold 12.6 million euros and received 1.5 million euros, yielding a net sale of 11.1 million euros. The bulk of this amount, some 10.8 million euros, derives from interest on Treasury notes owned by non-residents, which may be exchanged for foreign currency. Therefore, the Central Bank actually conducted a negligible amount of foreign exchange trading during this period of time.

No. 2/2009
January 6, 2009

[1] See the Central Bank of Iceland news release of December 3, 2008."

Most foreign exchange done was actually to send them their interest payments.

What the last foreign exchange regulations did was to deny those bond holders taking their main money back. They could just take out their intrest payments.

Government and Central bank is spending far less than might think on Krona exchange rate.

Look to http://www.sedlabanki.is/ reports.

IMF money is not being spent that way at all.

340 ISK/EUR Euro Central Bank rate is the fantasy.
