At the beginning of the year, the number of foreigners living in Iceland was 25,265, or around 8.6 percent of the population. Statistics Iceland figures suggest that is a significant increase on 1996 when foreigners made up just two percent of the population, or 5,356 people. The proportion of foreign residents in Iceland is now similar to that in both Norway and Denmark.
On the other hand, the proportion of the population made up of second-generation immigrants is much lower in Iceland than in Norway and Denmark: they made up 0.1 percent of the population in 1996 and 0.5 percent in 2008.
Foreign residents in Iceland are mostly in the 20-39 age group. The proportion of children in the group is much lower than in neighbouring countries, and second-generation immigrants are overwhelmingly in the under-10 age group. Statistics Iceland believes this is symptomatic of the relatively short history of immigration to Iceland; while others postulate that it is symptomatic of the fact that Iceland is seen as a ‘cool’ place for ‘cool’ Western youngsters to live for a year or two while immigration controls for others remain very tight, and residents of developing countries often find it difficult to gain access to the country.
Until the end of the 20th Century immigrants to Iceland mostly came from the other Nordic countries, but now the majority of immigrants come from Eastern Europe. Over 9,000 of the 25,265 total come from Poland; but as unemployment rises, the number of Poles (and immigrants generally) is decreasing again.
Only time will tell by how much and to what effect.

I agree with Gus, the term Second generation immigrant is just another way of keeping the barriers and the segregation active. If you are born in Iceland you are Icelandic, no matter where your parents are from. Nationalism and separation terms are just BS !!

first of all , wish you happy new year and best wishes , allright I am from Algeria and I want to immigrate to europe or canada but the situation of getting the Visa to the countries that I want is very difficult , but I can get the Schenguen Visa that allows me to travel to Iceland , because I think Iceland is nice country and it doesn’t have much population that’s why I see it very easiy for getting the papers of residence and having a good job , I have got degree of Translation ( arabic , french and english ) , so hope that everything will be allright with me in Iceland

Of course because Mayflower immigrants were also immigrants. The only true Americans are Amerindian first nations. The important question behind the semantics is whether Icelanders, who are a distinct nation want to maintain the link between their nation or ethnicity or whether then want to move to a US/UK/French-like model.
In the French/US/UK model the concept of “nation” is just degraded to a collection of individuals who pledge their allegiance to a state (or sovereign). Do Icelanders want to retain a unified high culture or do they want to ignore culture and inevitably degrade ethnicity to the level of tribalism (look at “Anglos” ,”Afro-Americans”, “Hispanics” categories). Do they want to move from being a strong family nation to being a superficial nation only united by feeble man-made symbols like the flag or the constitution?
ICELAND IS THE EUROPEAN NATION HAVING 60% OF ITS POTENTIAL POPULATION IN OTHER COUNTRIES. THERE ARE MORE “ICELANDERS” IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES THAN IN ICELAND ITSELF. ( COUNT CANADA, USA, DENMARK, UK, ETC…)

Does it include people of Icelandic descent? If so Gus you are contradicting yourself because these people of Icelandic descent only exist as long as you accept the “second generation immigrant” category. Otherwise if you refute it they only “belong” to their country of citizenship be it the US, Canada etc.

Obviously it’s different in the USA.
Nationality laws around much of Europe say that if your parent/s are not citizens then the new born child is not one either.
Birth within the territory of many countries does not automatically confer citizenship. Exception is a child born to unknown parents.

Birth use to be enough in some countries but that right was started to be abused in the mid 1990′s by so called ‘non-nationals’ flying in to give birth – just on time.
