Reykjavik protest organiser talking tougher than ever

hordur-torfasonHordur Torfason, the musician and protest organiser, said on a recent political chat show that he thinks the weekly Saturday afternoon protests he organises are having an effect, MBL.is reports.

He went on to say that the protests have, in his opinion, barely begun. Torfason believes that the protest rallies seen until now have been little more than a practice for what is to come.

Torfason said that at first people had been acquainting themselves with the issues and getting used to the concept of protesting. Then Christmas understandably took attention off the economic situation for a while, but now the nation is ready to protest for real.

He says he does not believe violence has found a place in the protests: “Sometimes when people come together, something kicks off. Of course that happens,” Torfason said. “We are a diverse group and a diverse nation.”

He warned, however, that if authorities were to begin putting bans and restrictions on protesters, that the situation could get out of hand.

The protesters gather each week to demand new parliamentary elections and to demand the resignations of those in charge of the Central Bank of Iceland and the Financial Supervisory Authority.

The latest talk is that the number of protests will be increased and may include gatherings during parliamentary sessions.

    Hi Readers,
Every time somebody talks to Geir Haarde about the need for David Odsson to step down as the Central Bank Governor, he says he does not hear that. But you know, if Mr. Haarde listens to and respects the voice of his people, he is bound to resign along with Mr. Odsson and a few others. How much progress have we seen since the collapse of the icelandic banks. No reason for him to stay in power… forward with the icelandic nation and forward with the voice of this great nation.
    Comment from Mr. K. Ceesay.

    Dear Kawsu Ceesay,
The fatality in your opinion is that Mr. Haarde “listens to and respects the voice of his people”.

  3. massimo says:

I think Geir Haarde with its government and David Odsson should have the decency and moral duty to say: “We are sorry, it was our fault, we are now resigning”.

Hordur Torfason for president!!! fighting till the end
