The social networking website, Facebook is a global phenomenon, and one of the most striking communications developments of the last couple of years.
As with many things to do with technology and the internet, Iceland has become rather enthusiastic about Facebook. In fact nearly half the nation is registered; including almost 96 percent of 20-29 year-olds. The ABS Media figures show that only 1,931 people in the 20-29 age bracket in all of Iceland are not members of Facebook. They do, however, not go on to explain whether those people are registered with one of Facebook’s many competitors, or simply live in caves.
People from all corners of the world and all ages use the website to keep an eye on what their friends and family are up to, and in turn, to inform their “friends” what’s going on in their lives. On Facebook the term “friend” means anyone from husbands and wives, to childhood sweethearts and the strange boy who threw up in class when you were seven.
