Icelandic foreign minister Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir is an honorary member of the International Women’s Commission (IWC) for a Just and Sustainable Palestinian-Israeli Peace. On her request, the Icelandic government has forwarded the following press release on behalf of the organisation. It is published unedited below:
PRESS RELEASE – INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S COMMISSION (IWC) FOR A JUST AND SUSTAINABLE PALESTINIAN-ISRAELI PEACE
28 December 2008
The International Women’s Commission (IWC) for a Just and Sustainable Palestinian-Israeli Peace demands an immediate cessation of the aggression by the Israeli military forces in Gaza, which has already cost hundreds of lives.
This slaughter can only further fuel the conflict and quash any remaining hope for peace between the Israeli and Palestinian people.
The IWC calls on the international community, and specifically to the Quartet, to immediately deploy an international force to bring an end to this madness, to protect innocent civilians and to alleviate the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The IWC further appeals to the Quartet, and in particular to the incoming US Administration, to press for immediate resumption of peace negotiations based on the Arab Peace Initiative as the only way of bringing an end to the occupation and achieving sustainable peace between Israel and Palestine, and in the region.

Exactly, good question! The world is outraged by israel defending herself, but where are the same people when it comes to the hamas terrorist attacks from gaza into israel? They obvioulsy do not care.
Israel left the Gaza strip in 2005. Instead of building up a prosperous economy and using the billions and billions of european tax payers’ money that had been pumped into gaza, hamas spent the money on attacking israel and now israel is blamed for the bad economic situation in gaza.

Israel is a post-colonial aberration. This arab land was given to the Jewish people by the British, when it was a British colony. In the 21st century, most ex-colonies who wished to regain their independence have done so. Some colonies remain, because the majority of the local population finds that being one with their former invader brings advantages which are more important than political freedom: minimum wages, social security, etc. These people are, at least officially, treated as equals by the mother state.
Isreal never treated the palestinians as equal citizens. They never showed them that their rule could be beneficient by improving their access to education, heathcare, etc, until they reached a standard of living comparable to that of the Israel citizens of jewish origin. Compulsory primary education in mixed schools would also have been a good idea: get the kids to go to school together and they’ll grow up having friends in both communities.
Instead, both communities were deliberately kept separated, with one outrageously privileged over the other. This could only breed resentment and hatred. It is very sad. Now the Palestinians want their land back, all of it, and home rule. The only viable political solution would be equal rights for all in Palestine and general elections. This would mean the end of the Israel state but hopefully the right to stay in Palestine could be negociated for Israelian communities. Apartheid situations and the creation of ghetto Palestinian sub-states have been shown not to be viable solutions.
Israel is illegally occupying massive stretches of Palestinian land that were taken by force. Thousands of Palestinian villages were wiped off the map and dynamited, their populations herded into the massive jail camp that is Gaza. Gaza has been under siege for decades, entry and exit is controlled by Israel and for the past few years.
Israel has decided that the democratically elected government of Gaza is unacceptable, so they have besieged Gaza in attempt to starve out the Palestinians to accept an Israeli selected ‘government’. Food, oil and medical supplies have been cut off and the water supply polluted and diverted.
Don’t talk about the Palestinians ‘aggression’ against Israel’s ‘innocent civilians’. It a war of one group of savages against another, good luck to them both as they both deserve it.
Palestinian terrorists will massacre all Israeli civilians if given a chance. That is a fact and they already proclaimed this to the world many times. The only reason they have not done this is because the Israelis are better armed and have more accurate weapons. Don’t fool yourselves by supporting these terrorist for they have no respect for anybody and they will kill you too if they have a chance. So, you better wake up and see the reality of the situation. If you give your hands to the Palestinian terrorists or any Islamic terrorist they will surely bite it and eat you too. That is just the fact. Do you think that if any of these Islamic terrorist ever rule your country or wherever you are that it will become a peaceful and kumbaya place. Just look at what the Talibans have done to women and anybody who do not share their beliefs. DEATH and misery, so, make your choice and I hope you don’t get the “herd mentality” as a result of the result of all the biased reporting that is being broadcast by the media. Think for yourself.
Israel has already murdered more *children* in the last two weeks (current child death toll, 80) than all of the Israelis including security forces who died in the last three years as a result of rocket attacks. AP reports today a total of 485 Palestinians dead and more than 2,400 wounded as a result of the bombings.
I would like to see the disgusting “yee-ha” crowd above, supporting this action, look into the eyes of those maimed victims lying in agony in their hospital beds and still say “go Israel”. No human being deserves this whatever their race, religion or the actions of their government. The 80 slaughtered children were not members of Hamas.

They held up their end of the cease fire… They have handed over hundreds palestinian prisoners for a few dead soldiers bodies, so their mother´s could bury them… Isreal has done a much better job of taking care of buisiness than palestine and because of that, they are wrong in defending their people.. And for each article I cite, others will dismiss them as Zionist, anti-Palestinian etc. I aknowledge the obverse will also be the case. Which leaves us with the same issues and few obvious solutions. If there is a better example of an intractable problem I strain to find it. Again I would caution dismissing Bush or Brown as simply crazy or rats. As Al Gore said in the 1996 Presidential Election, there are many good people with whom you can disagree without being disagreeable. While I did not make it clear (to my dis-credit) my issue is with and distinct to Hamas. I genuinely do not think the actions of Hamas further the cause of the Palestinian people, rather I believe it makes their lives much worse.

I am half jewish myself and I do think that Israel has a right to exist safely and securely and that it is entitled to defend itself against extremists like Hamas who only want to destroy Israel and refuse to honour any international agreement.

In previous posts on other subjects you lectured the icelanders about their behaviour towards foreigners, constantly stressing that all human beings are equal and deserve respect, that a mixture of cultures is a great thing and contibutes to the strengthening of society.
Yet you are losing all objectivity when it comes to Israel and this is not good.
Why do the standards about human respect and dignity you defended previously not apply to arabs living in Israel?
You know just as well as I do that there are plenty of arabs living in Israel, not in the palestinian territories but in Israel itself, with israeli passports, voting in israeli elections. Most of them are loyal citizens, even serving in the israeli army. Should they be leaving too? Your argument that the jewish people came first is no reason to deny other people their basic human rights, in fact, the UN agreed to the foundation of Israel, but not to ethnic cleansing. If I would follow your argument that any people which ‘came first’ according to archeological digs , should get the territory, then England and France should be given back to the celtic people, because they have lived there before the present inhabitants of these countries. Also Iceland should be given to Ireland because, as far as I know, there were already irish monks living there before the vikings arrived.
I am certainly not a fan of arab society but there is one thing you should keep in mind. Yerushalaim is a holy place, not only to the jews, but also to the christians and the muslims and each group should be able to visit the place and worship there, in fact, the present israeli government also recognizes this fact.

I am sad to notice that your argumentation very much ressembles the hate-filled reasoning that the nazi’s used against the jews, justifying the terrible persecution….according to the nazi’s the jews had ‘arrived later than the germanic people ‘ and therefore had ‘no right’ to live in Germany. They were ‘not worthy’ to live in ‘land that was historically german’ and they were expected to “leave” (in any sense of the word) and once their basic human dignity was taken away from them it was only a small step to the shoah.

This is written in the torah, but does this mean that ONLY jews can live in Israel?
In my opinion it means that there should be a jewish state in the land of Israel, and that is the case now.
It also means that the jews have the right to defend themselves against aggression.
But just like jews live in other countries where they deserve protection, Israel should be respectful to its non-jewish minorities, provided they are honest citizens.
I am not a theologist but with the torah one can do different things:
-take every single word, every single character litterally (this would mean that people would believe that earth is just 10.000 years old)
-even read things in it which are not written down litterally (Kabbalism)
-’adapt’ it to modern views (progressive judaism) .

IN MY CASE MY FAMILY LINE AND ANCESTRY AND THE SURNAME I STILL KEEP, GO BACK TO THE INHABITANTS OF ISRAEL THAT WERE EXPELED BY ROMANS. I KNOW IS GOING TO BE UNBELIEVABLE FOR YOU TO KNOW THAT MY FAMILY STILL KEEPS THE “KEYS” OF THE HOUSES WE OWNED IN ISRAEL LONG TIME AGO, THOSE KEYS HAVE BEEN PASSED GENERATION AFTER GENERATION.
I COULD ESTABLISH IN ISRAEL TOMORROW IF I WANTED AND GET GRANTED A HOUSE AND LAND, AND MANY OTHER THINGS. I COULD GET SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS TO STUDY AND ANYTHING I WANTED. BECAUSE I AM A PURE JEW, FROM A TRADITIONAL FAMILY WHO ALSO HOLDS A JEWISH SURNAME. YOU SEE, SOME JEWISH IN ISRAEL THEY HAVE NAMES THEY TOOK IN OTHER COUNTRIES, LIKE GERMAN NAMES OR POLISH. IT IS A PLEASURE FOR ME TO READ THE TORAH AND SEE MY SURNAME IN THERE AND KNOW ABOUT PEOPLE WHO WERE MY ANCESTORS THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO. YOU ALL KNOW THAT THE ONLY WAY OUT THIS IS BY COMPROMISE OF PEACE BETWEEN RESPONSIBLE PEOPLE. BUT HAMAS ACTS INDEPENDENTLY AND HAS WANTED A VIOLENT SOLUTION.
PALESTINA WAS AWARE THAT IF HAMAS CONTINUED WITH THEIR ATTACKS ISRAEL WOULD ATTACK BACK TO ELIMINATE ANY POSSIBILITY OF HAMAS TO KEEP ATTACKING. I AM SORRY FOR PALESTINA BECAUSE THEY ARE DIVIDED BY HAMAS, WHO ARE JUST CRAZY TERRORISTS.
