The Central Bank of Iceland (CBI) has still not needed to use any of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan to the country to stabilise the rate of the Icelandic krona, visir.is reports.
According to sources within the central bank, it is unclear how much interest Iceland will have to pay on its USD 2.1 billion IMF loan. IMF interest rates are variable and are tallied weekly as so-called SDR-interest. The interest is based on short-term rates in the Eurozone, the USA, Japan and the UK and is payable monthly. Currently the rate is roughly four percent and the CBI says that it should work out to be a good longer term benchmark.
It has also emerged in information from the CBI that loans from other nations have still not been finalised and their situation remains unclear. The bank would not be drawn on likely total interest costs until all loans have been firmly rejected or confirmed.

We are experiencing a CORRELITO in Iceland. The CBI keeps doing as if EVERYTHING WAS OK. AT THIS POINT NOTHING HAVE BEEN REALLY DONE TO BAIL OUT COMPANIES AND ICELANDIC FAMILIES. DOZENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE LOST THEIR JOBS AND HAVE TO SURVIVE ON 100 THOUSAND KRONURS A MONTH OR EVEN LESS. THAT MONEY IS NOT EVEN ENOUGH TO PAY FOR A ROOF AND EAT, SPECIALLY HAVING CHILDREN.
THOUSAND OF FOREIGN PEOPLE HAVE ABANDONED THE COUNTRY, THOUSANDS OF ICELANDERS HAVE, ARE AND WILL ABANDON THE COUNTRY DURING THE NEXT MONTHS. EVEN IF THE ECONOMIC PROSPECTUS ABROAD ISNT TOO ATTRACTIVE, ICELANDERS FIND IT TO BE THE ONLY OPTION AS THE COUNTRY IS TOTALLY RUINED.
THE CBI WILL RESOLVE THE “ICELANDIC BANKS PROBLEM” FIRST, and then they will see what they can do WITH WHAT IS LEFT OF THE COUNTRY. CBI, THE GOVERMENT AND THE BANKERS are working towards a politic for saving THEMSELVES… THEY ARE DOING ALMOST NOTHING TO HELP THE PEOPLE, IT SEEMS THEY DON’T REALLY CARE FOR US.

Erm, seems a bit to accept a $2.1bn loan and be “unclear” about the interest repayments !!! Especially since the money was deposited in the central bank some time ago.

The recent move by the government of Iceland to sell its embassy buildings in New York, Washington, London and Oslo, to cut down expenses is a clever one. I would like to suggest that they also terminate the services of all the current Central Bank Governors and hire a fresh one to further cut down expenses and minimise public expenditure. The economy is going to contract immensely by next year so no need for three governors. Forward with the people of Iceland and forward with the economy of Iceland. This country will continue to prosper, no doubt about that. Thank you all.

hi. american working/living in iceland, following events intently. correct me if i am wrong, and i probably am: but in currency exchange there is the INTERBANK RATE between two currencies, say ISK and USD… and then the actual bank handling the transaction “pads” the amount to account for fluctuations, add profit, etc. Most reputable banks and Credit Card companies only pad an additiona 4-6% normally. So, where is the accurate barometer of ISK exchange rates? I use http://www.m5.is as a gauge – and it is pretty closely parallel to the icelandic bank sites. But I think many foreign banks are padding the interbank rate heavily, as is their right, to safeguard against quick depreciation/risk/etc. But is it not fait to use those banks rates for doomsday commentary? The rate “is what it is” and is nothing more than relative to where it has been and where it may go. In my experience http://www.oanda.com has been a good reporter of reflecting actual interbank rates. They are usually only reporting a little higher than the icelandic bank’s rates. Just putting it out there… comments, ideas, rants? :)

Before you condemn Gus, please read his previous posts. I know there are LOTS of them. I know he uses CAPSLOCK (but, with a reason), but if you do you will notice that Gus actually LOVES Iceland.
His observations, though you will not agree with all of them, are usually to the point and he also comes up with alternatives, ideas and possible solutions to the Kreppa.
It is possible (and probably many icelanders fail to realize this) to love a place and at the same time be critical about it.
Like Gus, I sympathize with the average icelander who will be forced to pay for the enormous bill that was created by a handfull of cowboys who are now sitting out the crisis in their villa’s in the south of France, while innocent people will suffer for their mistakes. Even worse, the present government does not seem to have a clue, is not giving any information to the public and only spends money on bodyguards for Oddson and Haarde and more policemen to control the protests,while making life for normal icelanders more expensive by raising taxes…do you think that such people should get money?? There should be new elections and a complete cleanup!
This is a sickening thought, like the average american who is being blamed for the behaviour of the WBush administration.
If I would be living in Iceland I would be ANGRY, much more than the polite icelanders are, I mean, standing around the parliament in a quiet cirlce…do you think that these clowns who are still ruling you will be impressed at all? the interbank market is only the 3 domestic banks,
and our bank specialist vet ‘Arni Matthiesen controls 100% shares in all 3, his friend in CB David Oddson throws a wad of cash his way every once in a while for him to play with, so its easy for them to decide the exchange rate, the market is closed small and under control of 2 men,
this smoke and mirrors scheme to fool people into thinking the krona isnt dead looks stupid but it may actually work, dumber things have been done in the financial world not so long ago,
the biggest flaw is that this plan is controled by people who just finished ruining the country, but lets hope we get lucky.

Just a pice of advice, I said it 10 years ago in a conference about foringer working in iceland, when there were hardly 2 or 3 thousand in the country, there is nothing you can do to stop foringer comming, absolutely nothing, and nothing you can do to avoid changes in the city schools and culture, here we are 10 yeras later with more than 30,000 foringers in this country. you are the one that has to like it or leave, you are the one that has to walk the walk and talk the talk, they will take parts of our city, and schools and everything because it is the way it is, there is nothing you or anybody can do to change that, we live in a globalize world, intercultural world, it is the way it is in every country in the world, so you ither accept it or you are the one that sould go to spisberger or some remote place like this, nobody has to think or act the way somebody wants you to, everybody is free to have their culture where ever he or she is. whether its right or wrong that they dont mingle or that they live in groups or that they dont learn the language, and not everybody because many foringer do adopt the country´s culture and language and do make an effort, but that doesnt change the facts, so you are the one that has to take it or leave it or live in a bubble, because I repeat there is nothing you can do to change the naturale course of things.

The Icelandic Krona can purchase foreign currency to pay for imports and spending abroad debited from Icelandic check accounts & credit cards, without using the IMF loan.
Means that export earnings and foreign currency inflow is greater than the total of foreign currency purchases.

I´m sorry to let you know that the Icelandic krona CAN NOT pay for imports or absolutely ANYTHING, visa, mastercard and “bank” transactions, they all go through the Central bank not one krona is accepted outside iceland, if you pay with Visa, it goes through thr CBI, CDI has open bank accounts in few countries so if you send some money to England to a friend, lets say from Glitnir to The Royals bank of scotland, it will go from your account in glitnir to CBI and from ther to the account that the central bank of iceland has in scotland, and from ther it will go to the account of the person you are sending the money to. thats the only way forign transacctioins can be made in Iceland because absolutely no bank in the world wants to do bussiness with icelandic banks, (Wonder why?) so useing your same words I belive that the uninformed brain is yours, sorry pal.

The quote above is the most xenophobic item I have seen since I started following the latest Icelandic saga. It shows complete lack of respect for people who aren’t Icelandic. What’s wrong with having Polish or Pakistani neighborhoods? It would make the city more interesting and give Icelanders something else to do on weekends in addition to drinking in bars. How do Icelanders walk? Who would want to think like the writer of the quote? The crime in Iceland is generally caused by Icelanders and if there are any hookers they would also be Icelandic. Let’s have some reality. Foreigners came to Iceland to take jobs which Icelanders didn’t want, but relax they are leaving and Iceland can go back to being a pure (Norwegian-Celtic) race once again.

Of course foreign currency is only purchased with the IsKr in Iceland.
Who in their right mind would take IsKr out of the country to any foreign bank and expect to receive anything remotely close to the Iceland exchange rate.
Who in their right mind would find anything remarkable about that phenonomen?
I already said all foreign debit and credit transactions from Ice acounts are eventually renumerated with for currency purchased in Iceland.
Foreign currency is made available through export earnings being banked, visitor expenditure and renumerations.

I did read the posts Gus made about his currency dealings and I understand that for an icelander it must be irritating to read that some foreigner apparently even manages to deal with this kreppa succesfully while average icelanders are without a clue. Probably it is this sense of irritation which determines your attitude towards Gus.
I do not live in Iceland and I do not know Gus personally so I cannot judge if he was boasting, lying or just telling the truth, but fact of the matter is that he was always able to come up with a reply to any of the indignant icelandic reactions to his postings.

Regarding CAPSLOCK ,there has been a discussion about Gus having dislexia or not, I will not go into that but I have no reason to believe he is lying about this.

The current mid rate seems to be 350 so if anything its going to get worse. The Icelandic fantasy land of a appreciating Krona against the Euro is a joke and its making Iceland an even more expensive destination for non-Euro visitor.
Peter is right, this will get a lot worse before it starts recovering, im rather optimistic and im hoping for some signs of recovery in the last quarter of this year, if we survive at all it will be by the skin of our teeth, like Jesus said the only way out is hard work.
The same people that ruined Iceland are still running the show, how can you expect recovery, its more logical to expect more mistakes and they will probably not be small.

Well, thats a *stunning* claim that the Euro is worth 170isk on 1st January.
On planet Earth, the Euro is worth about 325ISK on 1st january.
On Planet Iceland, the Euro is worth whatever you want it to be, but thats irrelevant, the EU will use reality based figures.

Today went to the bank, tried to transfer from my Euro account to another Euro account, because I have to pay a friend some money and he is not living in the country at the moment, so I thought I just deposit mone into his Euro account and he can just withroww from it, but no it is not possible to do such a transaction, i had to take the euros out of my account convert them to krona and put it into his account in krona, so I told them ok, I have euros in cash, if i take euros from the bank I just give you euros to put it into my friends euro account? no it was not posibble, I had to convert it to kronas and put it into his icelandic krona account, so I said well I just make a transffer in euros from my account in euros or in cash I dont care to his account abroad, NOP only If i have a recit that I have to pay loke a loan or something that I can PROVE that i have to pay something abroad. they are desperately trying to make people change their money to krona so they can say the krona is strengthening, offcourse people buy krona, if they are FORCEING you to do it. so either I change euros to krona and deposit into his icelandic krona bank account and then when he transfers that money to the country he is noe he has to buy the euros again, or he can not get his money, that is simply thefth, marcial law, cuba I dont know, and then they say the krona is floating.

The theft is from exporters. Anyone who produces real goods, real value and wants to export it is give half the value in ISK.
Its a scandal that those who suffered from an artificially high currency in the past (hard to make a living selling goods abroad) are again being made to pay for the crimes of the bankers.

You’re right, the ratio of FX is controlled by CBI, and depends how many companys/people are forced to buy ISK. Can you post here some links to check the “REAL POWER” of icelandic currency (on ECB website is still from 3th of december)

That has always been the way with a foreign currency account in Iceland.
When you withdraw from the account, you can only get IsKr at the exchange rate for your foreign currency at that time.
You should read the account regulations/restrictions before you open a foreign currency account, they are what dictate how it operates, not what you think you should be able to do with the account.

These are the currency restrictions /controls, get use to it. These are exceptional economic times, well at least not since 1980 to 1985 have Iceland seen such restrictions. The currency restrictions in the ’80s were much stricter and managed to rein in (along with other measures) a devalued ailing currency along with expresso inflation.
You can’t do whatever you want to do, whenever you want to do it.
The purpose of currency restrictions are to restrict foreign currency purchases towards more essential things.
Restrict foreign currency purchases to the amount earned through exports.
If you have an individual debt with another person who lives outside the country you just have to fill out the relevant form and you will be able to make good that debt.
This is maybe is an earth shattering concept but the times of a country importing more than exporting are over.

Those European countries who Iceland traded with, benefitted from Icelanders going into debt to buy items (eg to build and furnish houses). In fact the lines of credit were opened wide by Europe (just like a store card) to allow consumers to go into debt to consume.

i totally agree with the dept issue in Iceland , i never borrowed money from any bank or institution and i never had a credit card, i paid cash for everything but because of certain happenings my company went down and i am in dept. so im starting again which is fun and challenging i do miss the money i had but one thing i learnt from this all is Money does not make you happy but being broke makes you miserable,

According to the Fund for Peace, a state that is failing has several characteristics, such as group-based inequality, brain drain, sharp economic decline, corruption and criminal behavior, to name a few attributes. The magnitude of corruption and wrongdoings at the highest levels of Icelandic political and financial system that have come to light following the country’s economic collapse begs this question: Is Iceland a failing state?
In October 2008, Iceland’s three major investment banks — Glitnir, Kaupthing, and Landsbanki, which the Conservative party had privatized eight years earlier in favor of their cronies — collapsed and were taken over by the Icelandic government. They had, through various questionable artifices, incurred a combined debt equal to 7-10 times Iceland’s gross domestic product (GDP). Hundreds of thousands of investors outside of Iceland lost all of their savings, inducing the British government to invoke anti-terrorism laws in an attempt to contain the damage….

THE TRUTH IS THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE PEACE AND LIVE IN HARMONY. RELIGIONS SHOULD NOT BE A SECONDARY THING, BUT THE PROBLEM IS WHEN PEOPLE USE RELIGION TO JUSTIFY THE KILLING OF OTHER PEOPLE.
PALESTINIAN GOVERN HAD A PLAN WITH ISRAEL TO TAKE STEPS INTO PEACE AND THINGS WERE GOING POSITIVELY ON. BUT AS LONG AS HAMAS IS THERE FUCKING EVERYTHING UP, IT IS NOT GOING TO BE A POSSIBILITY FOR PEACE.
ISRAEL IS A STATE AS IT IS PALESTINA, AS IT WAS ACCORDED BY THE MAJORITY OF THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD. FOR ARAB COUNTRIES THE EXISTENCE OF ISRAEL IS NOT AN OPTION, AND BECAUSE OF THAT THE WAR STARTED.
ISRAEL IS ATTACKING THE POSITIONS OF HAMAS IN PALESTINA. I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY HAMAS ROCKET THEIR BOMBS FROM SCHOOLS AND OTHER PUBLIC PLACES, EVEN FROM FAMILY HOUSES, THAT IS SO CRAZY, BECAUSE WHEN ISRAEL ANSWERS TO ELIMINATE THE ARTILLERY OF HAMAS THEY HAVE LITTLE CHANCE OF NOT KILLING CIVILIANS. BUT ISRAEL HAS THE RIGHT OF DEFENDING ITSELF. HAMAS CANNOT CONTINUE TO THROW BOMBS OVER ISRAEL CIVILIANS WITHOU ISRAEL ANSWERING BACK.
THIS IS A WAR, A SAD WAR. AND MANY INNOCENT ARE DYING IN BOTHS SIDES. THE DIFFERENCE IS ALSO THAT THE JEWS BELIEVE ON THE KINGDOM OF GOD TO BE ESTABLISHED ON THE EARTH, A KINGDOM OF PEACE. Wow, really an interesting article. I must say that the situation even seems to be worse than I feared.
I already had very little respect for this elite and the fact that apparently THEIR debts were simply “forgiven” while ordinary icelanders will have to pay every single penny of it is an outrage…it even surprises me more that protests in Iceland are being so mild. These guys are really scum: playing around with the money of their own people, then doing the same with money of foreign savers and adding insult to injury, writing off their own debts…
I cannot understand how icelanders can be expected to live by all the emergency measures and rules which were introduced by the national bank while these very same rules do not apply to the elite.
I already had a full understanding for british use of anti-terror laws before and this just confirms it was completely right..this is a form of crime and such a great disrespect for possessions of others that it can be labelled a form of state-terrorism.
Icelanders should not feel personally insulted about this: these laws were not used against them but against the elite of bankers/managers/politicians running the show….
BTW, I do not encourage the icelandic elite to start real proceeding against the UK because in that case their own shady deals will be exposed to a whole new, less tolerant and much larger audience!
In Holland, during the war and the german occupation there were criminals who managed to amass a fortune thru all kinds of theft, illegal dealings, manipulations and collaboration…after the war there was a complete monetary cleanup with the introduction of a new guilder. All capital which could not be legally declared was made illegal.
this worked out quite well and hopefully iceland will be doing something similar to avoid vultures taking advantage of all this mess.
I am affraid that as long as these guys are still in place nothing will change…too bad since by now most icelanders will realize that the previous way of life was ruinous. The present conditons will force icelanders to create a new society where not materialism but other values will take a central place (and maybe something really good will come out of this) .
Something which somehow impressed me was a remark by Gus in one of his earlier posts about a 20 year old girl driving to university in her “own” fancy car (I will not go into discussions how much such a car used to cost) , bought with borrowed money.
At first I thought Gus was exaggerating but then I saw a report about Iceland in a german newspaper where exactly the same was being mentioned: apparently it was very normal that some 20 year old from a village , without an education, without a job, without any financial resources, could just walk into a bank and borrow lots of money, only to buy luxuries like a fancy car. such kids gladly would drive “their’ car to university, showing it off and enjoy the belief that they were part of a superior and rich society in which such behaviour was possible.
this was written in the Süddeutsche Zeitung a really serious newspaper which is not known to be joking around.
Just out of curiosity I looked around at Reykjavik university when i was there and what i saw greatly surprised me: there is a HUGE car park behind the building, FULL of cars. I am sure not all of these cars “belong” to professors and lecturers: they must “belong” to students…
O yes, next to the university there is the national museum and there is the nordic house…but I was there on a MONDAY and both were closed!
At universities overhere you will see lots of BIKES in stead of cars since students cannot afford cars. When I studied already the idea of owning a car was out of the question. If I would have gone to a bank asking for a loan , backed by nothing, because I wanted to buy a car they would have laughed at me and kicked me out.
I hardly saw any bikes at Reykjavik university….and the weather was not SO bad (around 5 degrees and sunny, it was last november) , nice cycling weather in fact…
I always went to university on bike, even when the weather was awfull (and i did not feel unhappy about this at all since almost everybody else had to do this too) and only bought myself a car when I was able to afford it without making any debts . Now my wife and I both have a car, not showy SUV’s or fancy BMW’s but skoda’s, however, they are 100 % new and 100 % ours and we did not borrow a penny to buy them.

You did not even have to go to the bank to see about a car loan it was all arranged for you at the car dealership, and yes it was possible to sign loan forms ( without even understanding the consequences of foreign loans changing with the value of the krona)and if the car was
pre owned you could be driving it out the showroom a hour later(if new usually after 3/4 days) It really was that easy.
All they needed was to type your name and social security number into the computer which verified if you was acceptable for credit>if you owned a home generally you got a car loan because you home was security.for the young ,students etc they normally required a signature of somebody to guaranty the loan.Here in Iceland everybody is related so people could always find a willing person to sign for them.
You did not even have to deal with any authority figure in the car dealership . The loan could be arranged buy the (usually very young ) car salesman.
Foreign loans were usually granted to 80%-100%value of purchase price of the Vehicle and could be upto 84 months of repayments.Also in Iceland it is very normal to later re sell your vehicle and the new buyer to sign to take over your loan.

You didnt even have to be 20, you could see 18 – 19 year olds with brand new cars, you can still see them but give it 2 or 3 months. Getting a CREDIT CARD not a debit card, was as easy as going to the bank and ask for it, you only needed to have an account there you would get it after 2 or 3 days for about 1000 Euros CREDIT(with the pre crisis FX rate) no problem let the British, Dutch, Belgians, etc, etc; pay for it, if you needed credit for more than that then you needed a signature as collateral, you could buy well… get in retail stores like BT for example from a memory stick to a HD 45″ plasma or a Super lap top computer or whatever you would fancy with 100% credit no interest no down payment and you didn´t need absolutely anything just your social security number(Kenitala) not even the credit card that you had just got so easely at the bank as a garantee, I came back to iceland 15 years ago and told my wife this country is going to collapse in about 15 years maximum 20, it was 15, it was so clear this was going to happen.

Perhaps as some consolation, it also happens overhere that people will use borrowed money to buy a car and to take a loan for this from the car dealership, overstretching their own financial possibilities. A cousin told me the following story: he used to work in a car dealership himself (in fact he was very good at it ) and he exactly knew which people were the ‘right’ victims. These were people who wanted to show off (you already could tell from their dress and behaviour) and such people wanted to drive a new car every 2 years.
So they were going to the car dealer regularly to swap their ‘old’ car for a new one and off course they always had to pay more money and take extra loans.
My cousin also arranged these loans with them (for an interest rate higher than what the bank would ask, but these people did not care) and once he sat down behind the computer with one of the ‘victims’. He did ask these people about their financial situation, their income and their liabilities (since it was not so easy to get a loan as it used to be in iceland). When this particular person revealed his financial situation my cousin was shocked to notice that this guy was still paying off loans for 3 previous cars which amounted to about 50 % of his entire income. this guy also had children but apparently he preferred to spend on cars.
My cousin then, for once in his carreer , stopped acting ‘professionally’ and asked this man:”Sir, are you certain it is wise to take an extra loan under these conditions and spend more than 50 % of your income on cars ??”(according to the regulations this man was still entitled to get a loan btw)
The reaction was extremely unfriendly: this guy became furious, started screaming at my cousin and told him to mind his own bussiness!
So my cousin shrugged his shoulders and thought:”Ok, if you really want to ruin yourself that much, please go ahead. Sorry for trying to help you.”

People are falling into this trap anywhere in the world.
Here in Holland in recent years there have appeared numerous (dutch) internet banks, offering loans to about anybody, however at a much higher rate than what the regular banks would ask.
But contrary to these banks they do not ask ‘troublesome’ questions about the financial situation of the borrower.

Just to contribute to this forum …… I asked CBI when they expected the ISK to be “floated” out on the international market ……. below their reply !
“The reason why the international market is not yet involved is i.a. the restrictions on FX transactions levied on the 28th of November. Because of those restrictions, international banks can not freely buy or sell ISK. It is not known when the restrictions will be lifted. They are set in close co-operation with the IMF as a measure to stabilize the ISK, so that in the near future they can be gradually lifted and ISK investors can be gradually let out of their positions without it having a devastating effect on the exchange rate. At the same time, it is intended to stop offshore trading with the ISK, by forcing exporters to repatriate all their foreign currency earnings.
The law allowing the restrictions is valid for two years. The current rules will be revised at the latest by the end of February. Otherwise, it is not clear how long they will be in effect. “

My local council was hit hard by what happend in iceland they had a lot of money in them accounts. We train local schoold children here in manchester and was funded by the local council now that money has dried up
