Construction of Reykjavik’s new concert and conference centre could be delayed by up to a year – but the City of Reykjavik and the national government are understood to stand by their contractual obligation to finish the building.
Icelandic culture minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir made the statement in parliament yesterday, according to MBL.is. Her remarks came in response to a question from Social Democrat Steinunn Valdis Oskarsdottir, who asked what would happen to the music hall now some of the project backers have been declared bankrupt.
Steinunn Valdis and Thorgerdur Katrin were both in agreement on the importance of completing the construction project. Keeping people employed in public sector construction fits well with the government’s recent 12-step plan to economic recovery.

I will sing there soon and rule the country. Hurry up and finish it!
There are not money in the country, save it for the future, too many people are gonna be unemployer very soon.
Hahaha!!!
Finish late?
You must be kidding. Landsbankin is main investor of this mega-construction and now it seems it’s up to do the government to fund the totally of the project. That said Icelanders have to pay the bill of another Opera house, reduce to half the initial project.
In my opinion there was no need of another house right now. Iceland needs now things so much more important…
Now I have to say that the Icelandic goverment has started to think like the old banks. What about the costs? Then what about the running costs?
I think the Icelandic people can use that money in a better way. It is cheaper to close that project down now directly. I am working with people and companies in Iceland and I think they can use the tax payers money better. I think it is time for a new election if the goverment has not understood anything what is happening in Iceland
Well, now – the article – ‘Economic crisis forces new boutique to open in Reykjavik’ -

makes sense. You just have to have a new outfit for a concert don’t you?

Will you be doing your Christmas shopping in Woolworths ?
I hear they are having quite a SALE.. Before they shut and fire their 30000 workers..
I must say i am surprised that the mighty Tesco did not take them over….. I think in the last 20 years most of Woolworths trade probably fell to supermarkets.
Not sure of your point fishy. Woolies has been failing for some time over here. A classic case of a company that tried to be a little of everything but was outclassed in each area by others on the high street.
Whilst I’ll be sad to see it go on one level, even back in the 80s pre-internet it wasn’t worth buying music and films there.

Bromley86 says it all really. It is sad – especially for the staff, but this not a time for sentimentality.
Indeed Tesco have recently acquired a number of Woolworths leases.
