Yesterday afternoon’s 15.00 debates in the Icelandic parliament had to be postponed until 16.10 while police cleared some 30 protesters from the public gallery. Most of the protesters were arrested and taken to the main police station. Some other people were also arrested for hustling police officers outside the building.
The atmosphere was very tense around Althingishusid parliament house, MBL.is reports. Protesters stayed around the building for some time after the debate began again inside.
A group calling itself Action Action (Adgerd Adgerd) sent out a statement saying that its members had gone into the parliament precisely to stop its normal operation. Their reason being that parliament, as it stands today, is a broken institution. They said they want to expose the mistrust in the government and demand its resignation and new elections to follow.

They should have burn it!
That will habe been eficient…
I don’t quite get this, orchafine. Surely, Iceland is in trouble and there have been serious mistakes made. No one argues that point, I suppose. That however does not change the fact that Iceland is a parliamentary democracy. The Icelandic parliament has been elected by the Icelandic people. That’s why the police has to protect MPs – because they are the representatives of the people. They have been elected, the 30 protesters that disrupted the work of the Althing weren’t.
Talk of ‘revolution’ seems to be a bit odd, really. Nor do I believe it to be the best way out of the economic crisis to resort to violence and public disorder.
Ok, maybe it is a bit extreme.
BUT, today’s representatives of the people are illegitimate. From statistics, majority of Icelanders want elections strait away and want those clowns out of the power.
This will never happen if citizens go to normal way. Iceland really need a shake up right now, otherwise this hypocrite situations will just keep going on like it is now.
I mean everybody is lying in the current government, and the Central Bank is not in better way.
I can guarantee you, by the pacific habits of Icelanders and careless engagement they will let innocent population being treated like sheep for at least 20 years! Looking at the natural potential Iceland has, the population definitely doesn’t deserve to pass through that and being kept in the dark about: BANK SECRECY, GOVERNEMENT DECISIONS, BANKRUPCY, CORPORATE CORRUPTION AND POLITICAL ACCUMULATION OF TERMS.
old saying; ‘people get the sort of government they deserve’. I am from USA and we had a brain dead chimp for prez the last 8 years!
“a brain dead chimp for prez”
Stan that is the funniest thing I have read all day. But it is true lol your so right. He may even be beyond brain dead. Not sure but definitely a possibility.
Icelanders however may have gotten what they voted for but. they certainly want to get them out. Can’t say that I blame them.
and soon we will have a non-brain dead chimp
Bernard Madoff, a quiet force on Wall Street for decades, was arrested and charged on Thursday with allegedly running a $50 billion Ponzi scheme in what may rank among the biggest frauds ever. Who investigates the fraud in the Icelandic banks?…all they do is to appoint new clown after the other, even when IMF gave them the loan they requested for does not make these self-centered clowns that messed the whole show up to be above Justice system if there really any in this case.
I lost too much money ,, and I have lost confidence in the Icelandic banking system, what is the guarantee that this is the end of the mess they have in stock?….What if IMF refused to grant the loan?….where is the Justice system to Investigate this mess?…everybody can’t Just be mute on this and allow the over-zealous clowns to play with bankers money and go away with all pleasure,!
mate, I just hope the IMF will refute the loan, that would be a dream.
This is a nightmare for the general population, we didn’t ask for this, we didn’t ask for easy loans.
I live out in the country in my “bubble” as someone said before, to make it blunt, I live in my “bubble” for a reason.
I hope they get it, people are fucking with it, no exeptions.
What would happen if Iceland didn’t have the $5b IMF & others loan?
I’d guess that there would be the same correction that there’s going to be anyway (maybe more severe), but it would be immediate. Anybody have a better guess or an article link?
