Icelandic clothing designer, Steinunn Sigurdardottir received the prestigious Soderberg Design Award at a ceremony in Gothenburg, Sweden on Tuesday night.
The award goes to designers deemed to be pushing the boundaries and raising the profile of Nordic design on the global stage. The Soderberg is decided by a jury and comes with a SEK 1 million (EUR 101,000) prize, as well as the always-important respect and recognition.
“It is incredibly nice that the prize should go to an Icelander. The way I look at the prize has changed after the events of the past months,” Sigurdardottir said in an interview with Frettabladid.
“I feel like the prize brings great hope and reminds us that we should not give up. I think it is of great importance that we emphasise innovation in Iceland more and this prize is a good example of that,” she added.
Sigurdardottir is the first clothes designer ever to be awarded the Soderberg Prize – one of the biggest design prizes in the world.
According to the designer, the prize money will help in the creation of her next collection, due in February; as her business, in Iceland and internationally, is not proving immune to the current financial turmoil.

It is a great push for nordic designing and specially for Iceland, and for Steinunn I say you have made a great job for Icelandic fashion .
