Icelandic used cars sold to buyers outside of Iceland may be eligible for a sales tax refund if a proposed new bill is passed by parliament.
Used cars are not selling well in Iceland at the moment – especially quality used cars, such as nearly new Audis, Range Rovers and Mercedes.
The high sales tax on new cars in Iceland has always made second hand cars much more expensive than in other counties. The strong Icelandic krona has combined with this to make sure that Iceland has never been known for its car exports.
But with the current low exchange rate of the Icelandic krona and the possible refund of sales tax, Iceland could look to find an overseas market for its many used cars for sale.

Sounds like a good idea. Get rid of those gas guzzlers by exporting them to an oil producing nation, preferrable one with subsidized gas prices, and even make lots of bucks this way!
I think that is a good idea. In tough times you have to find ways to keep the economy going and this is a step in the right direction.
iam lookin for a nice car for a good price .
I am looking for a good SUV at good price, Range Rover, Toyota, Mercedes ML Series
Try and look at http://www.nordiccarsale.is
Plenty of choice and , as far as I can judge, very reasonable prices which include shipping of the car to several ports (including Rotterdam).
Some things to keep in mind though:
-how about a test ride and guarantees? Once in my life I have bought a (second hand) car without making a proper test ride. It was a big mistake! Luckily there was a guarantee and this allowed me to get rid of this car (exchange it for one that was much better)
-it is advisable to insure the car during the transport
-unloading the car in its port of destination usually costs something too
-registration of the car in the country of destination must be paid for, as well as certain taxes.Even if VAT is skipped in iceland, you probably will have to pay it in the country of destination and since it is based on the value of the car when it is NEW this can be quite a lot.
So if you add up all this to the advertised prices I do have some doubts wether it will be such a great deal, however I am curious about the experiences of people who have tried to buy a car in such a manner.

Back in the good old days here when the mighty krona was 60 Isk = 1 Usd
Many people here imported vehicles from usa.
from autotrader ebaymotors and such.
A example say a ford mustang gt with a V8 engine new would be aprox 30000 usd , which was 1,8 million krona.
BUT there was a HUGE duty + tax to pay also registration and shipping which doulbed the price to 3,6 million krona .
BUT this was stll cheaper than gowing to our vastly overpriced dealerships, which mainly kept customers by offering EASY finance and service warranties.
the duty was less on small engine vehicles .
and even less on Pick ups which are taxed as work vehicles.
Due to the HUGE duty many tried to get around this by trying to pass faulty lower priced invoices claiming the vehicles cost much less.
@Fishy
Thanks for the info . I remember that a few years ago people also imported US cars to Holland because at that time the USD was very low compared to the EUR and even with the extra charges apparently it was still worthwhile.
I must say that I am not really an expert in this but in the EU it can pay to import a car from, let us say italy to Germany (even a german produced car) or from Germany to Holland. Since german / dutch cardealers are so overpriced that even a german produced car would be cheaper if bought in Italy and imported to Germany.
I even remember that Volkswagen received an enormous fine from the EU when it tried to prevent its dealers in Austria and Italy to sell cars to german citizens. This was considered a violation of free trade in the EU zone.
However, I am not really an expert in this. I was just curious, checking out this nordiccarsale site and discussing it with friends.
BTW I found it an absolute pleasure to drive in Iceland!
