Norway students to receive money for work sick days

Norway students to receive money for work sick daysStudents in Norway combining their studies with part-time work will be offered loans to safeguard their income if they are sick, the government has announced.

From next summer, those off work due to illness will be allowed access to Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund grants. The initiative is part of a new proposal to be presented by the government in October.

At present, if a students with part-time jobs receive sick pay from the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (Nav), they are not permitted to claim a Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund grant. But the Norwegian government plans to change the current regulations.

Conservative MP Henrik Asheim explained that many students have part-time jobs so it seems fair that if they are unwell they receive sickness benefit. He noted that it was “unreasonable” these students do not have the same access to the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund as those who do not have part-time work.

Asheim went on to say that the government would like to combine the government benefit system’s sickness allowance funds with the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund sickness grants. He added that the change would benefit 1,750 students.
