Police suicide after drink drive arrest

A Danish policeman committed suicide in his patrol car last week shortly after being arrested for drunk driving.

The 45 year-old, who was stopped by his colleagues in Roskilde on the night of 9th November for driving under the influence of alcohol, shot himself in the head with his own gun.

“The officers cannot explain why they had not made sure that he did not have a weapon close by. He was their colleague and when they came to arrest him he seemed calm and certainly not like someone who would commit suicide,” Deputy Public Prosecutor Mette Vestergaard told Politken.

The constable was approached after members of the public reported him for driving erratically. His arresting officers have confirmed that he was drunk, but claim he was not paralytic.

An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact course of events, how drunk the policeman was and what had triggered the suicide.
