Former Iceland FM takes up Afghanistan UN job

Iceland’s former foreign minister, Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir, is on her way to Afghanistan to take up a United Nations position.

The former Minister for Foreign Affairs and leader of the Social Democrats is en route to Kabul, the Afghan capital with the United Nations.

The former politician and high-profile cancer survivor confirmed to the Frettabladid newspaper in Iceland that she has been appointed the head of the UN Women in Afghanistan equal rights bureau.

Gisladottir told the newspaper that the role is time-intensive and involves a lot of paperwork; but that she is looking forward to her challenging new job.
