Icelandic environment ministry to investigate itself over banking report

kyrSvandis Svavarsdottir, Iceland’s Minister for the Environment, has initiated an internal review at her ministry which will see workers comb the recent Althingi bank crash report and decide if its conclusions should lead to changes within the Ministry for the Environment.

A statement said that representatives from every office within the ministry will take part in the project alongside the Minister’s assistant. The group is expected to examine the report over the coming weeks and decide what actions the ministry needs to take.

It is extremely important for all of society to take lessons from the so-called Black Report, not least government, Minister Svandis Svavarsdottir said in the statement.

The statement says that the Ministry for the Environment emphasises professional and democratic government practices and that the banking report is an incentive to improve the ministry’s performance still further.

It is not yet known which — if any — other ministries will follow the MftE’s lead.
