One of Iceland’s most recognised television newsreaders, Elin Hirst and presenters Thora Tomasdottir, Elsa Maria Jakobsdottir and Johanna Vilhjalmsdottir have been made redundant from national broadcaster RUV and will be officially informed today.
Visir.is reports that today will be a black day for RUV, as 10-20 staff members are set to lose their jobs.
Elin Hirst has read the news for RUV for many years, as well as presenting the weekly news close-up show Frettaaukinn alongside Bogi Agustsson. The other three are all research journalists and presenters for the popular Kastljos current affairs programme, which has been hit particularly hard by the current cost cutting drive.
The redundancies are part of wider cost cutting at RUV, which needs to cut its budget by ISK 300 million (USD 2.3 million).
The names and positions of all the unlucky employees are not known, but all the on-screen broadcast staff mentioned in this article happen to be female.
