The long awaited review of the IMF loan to Iceland took place today and the next tranche of funds was agreed upon.
The Icelandic government can expect to receive funds amounting to USD 168 million directly from the IMF in the immediate future, followed by agreed funds from the other Nordic countries and Poland.
The money will be used primarily to strengthen Iceland’s currency reserves and the total loan in Icelandic kronur is around 100 billion – 80 billion of which coming from Iceland’s Nordic neighbours, RUV.is reports.

Iceland was once famous for it’s high standard of living, long life expectancy, the beauty of the women, 100% literacy, its independent spirit and many other things. What happened???

“Now name a good Icelandic musician”
My nomination is cellist and composer Hafliði Hallgrímsson, born in Akureyri in 1941. He played in various orchestras for 20 years, and was good enough to be included in one of Paul Tortelier’s televised Masterclasses on the BBC; I remember that programme.
So far as composition is concerned, one of his works, Rimaat, was premiered at the opening ceremony of the Lillehammer Winter Olympics in 1994 (per Wikipedia).
So I think Hafliði Hallgrímsson is a good musician from Iceland.
“that’s the one thing Iceland does best in the world”
Name a famous Icelandic musician… easy, Bjork.
Now name a good Icelandic musician… err.. Nope.
An Cath Dub,
The trains are a good idea.
And they should let them run on electricity: that is what Iceland has in large supplies.
They should invest in transportation (mainly trains, especially one between Reykjavík and the Keflavík International Airport and one between Reykjavík and Akureyri), to make more working places and increase the mobility of manpower. Also, they should encourage musicians; that’s the one thing Iceland does best in the world (maybe except for England).
Also, the Icelanders should start selling their fancy tellies on E-Bay or something. Televisions brainwash you; the internet’s way better.
That should be a good start.
that money will come who will pay? be the responsible banks that go bankrupt are not responsible ?

Which would, of course, mean a little more if whe hadn’t been saying the same thing about this review for the past 6 months :) .
Wow. I am very surprised:
It’s going to be difficult to wriggle out of that if the Althingi don’t approve the current Icesave agreements. The only potential caveat I can see is:
http://www.imf.org/external/np/sec/pr/2009/pr09375.htm
BTW, where are we with the Icesave agreements?
AND ARE THEY GOOD NEWS AT ALL?? THIS ONLY MEANS: “WELCOME TO POVERTY”.
NOW THE COUNTRY IS GOING TO SURVIVE ON INTERNATIONAL AID PROGRAMS. THAT ONLY SHOWS HOW RUINED AND BANKRUPT ICELAND IS, AND HOW USELESS IS THE ICELANDIC KRÓNA. NOW YOU CAN REALLY SAY GOODBYE TO THE MONOPOLY MONEY.
FOREIGN COUNTRIES WANT ICELAND TO PAY IN EUROS, USA DOLLARS AND ANY CURRENCY OF REAL VALUE. THAT MONEY IS GOING TO BE USED MAINLY TO KEEP THE COUNTRY GOING ON, BUY FUEL, MEDICINES AND ALL THE STUFF WE NEED. UNTIL… WEL, UNTIL GOD KNOWS WHAT. BECAUSE THIS GUYS IN THE GOVERNMENT HAVE NOT A SINGLE IDEA OF WHAT TO DO.
I DON´T SEE ICELAND COMING OUT OF THIS SOON. A RUINED ECONOMY, NOW HIGHLY IN DEBT BECAUSE OF THE THIRD WORLD LIKE LOAN PROGRAMS, AND A TOTALLY USELESS CURRENCY. AND THE WORST OF ALL, TOTALLY INCOMPETENT PEOPLE. ICELAND HAS JUST SHOWN THAT THIS COUNTRY CANNOT TAKE CARE OF ITS OWN MATTERS. THIS CANNOT BE A TOTALLY INDEPENDENT COUNTRY.
THIS ARE ALSO THE LAST DAYS OF ICELANDIC REAL INDEPENDENCE. THIS IS NOT A REPUBLIC ANYMORE. THIS IS A JOKE, RULED BY THE IMF AND THE OTHER NORDIC COUNTRIES. NOW THE BIG DECISIONS ARE NOT GOING TO BE TAKING IN REYKJAVÍK ANYMORE. BUT MAINLY IN OSLO AND THE OTHER NORDIC CAPITALS. NOW EVEN POLISH ARE GOING TO RULE MORE IN THIS COUNTRY THAN ICELANDERS THEMSELVES.
I CAN SEE THE THOUSANDS OF POLISH LIVING HERE LOOKING AT ICELANDERS AND LAUGHING AT THEM, THINKING ” YOU LIVE THANKS TO A LOAN OF MY COUNTRY, YOU EAT THANKS TO OUR MERCIFUL SENSE OF COMPASSION”….
Lets wait and see when that money comes.
