Icelandic actor getting rave reviews in USA

stefan-karl“Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical” is the catchy name of the festive play currently enthralling Baltimore, on its way to Boston later in the month.

Billed as “Broadway’s number one holiday hit”, the current incarnation of the Grinch musical stars versatile Icelandic actor Stefan Karl Stefansson as the Grinch.

Perhaps best-known as Robbie Rotten in the children’s TV hit Lazytown, Stefan Karl is bringing a new energy to the role and impressing adults and children alike.

The play itself is receiving somewhat mixed reviews, the Baltimore Sun for example saying: “the plot is as stuffed with fillers as the Christmas roast beast”! But tempering it with: “The scenery, costumes and special effects – as well as Stefan Karl’s performance as the Grinch, are superb”.

Meanwhile, Variety describes the play as thin material with an unmemorable musical score, while at the same time raving that, “This brightly wrapped and loudly delivered family entertainment is sure to please the holiday crowds”.

“What literally elevates this production is its lanky star, the green fur-covered Stefan Karl, who engagingly snarls, prances and even does a little soft shoe. He shrewdly plays to the house, but then again, so does the entire production,” the Variety reviewer continues.

Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical is on at the Baltimore Hippodrome until the 23rd November, and then at Boston’s Citi Performing Arts Centre Wang Theatre from 26th November to the 28th December.
