Saving Iceland protests

The fourth Saving Iceland action camp has now begun in the area of Helguvik. Early this morning around forty activists from some ten countries occupied the construction site where Century Aluminum are preparing to build a aluminium smelter in Helguvik. Protesters chained themselves to equipment at location. The Helguvík plant depends on the expansion of geothermal energy in Hellisheidi and around the Reykjanes area.

According to local news portal Visir.is one activist was arrested, the arrested had tried to run away, then covered his face and refused to tell his name to the authorities. Other protesters where allowed to leave after showing their ID/passport and unlocking them selves from the equipment.

Information about Saving Iceland can be read at their web site. Also read their post in the protest in Iceland.

More protests are scheduled over the next days by the group.
