Rare Scandinavian stamps to be sold for Millennium Villages

Some stampsWall Street banker Bill Gross will sell the Scandinavian section of his extensive stamp collection in auction at Spink Shreves gallery in New York on 16 May 2008.

The auction, conservatively estimated to raise at least USD 1 million, will be truly unique. As all proceeds will go to the Millennium Villages Project at the Earth Institute at Columbia University in New York City, the bidding will be guilt-free and organisers hope selling prices will reflect this.

The collection itself is the main attraction though – containing many rare examples of Scandinavian stamps from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among them are several one-of-a-kind items, including one from 1897, reported to be the rarest of all Icelandic stamps.
