Small town’s big plans for Copenhagen climate summit

The Copenhagen suburb of Hvidovre will be the showcase of Denmark’s top energy saving ideas during the 2009 climate summit in Copenhagen, reports Copenhagen Capacity.

In an effort to show some of Denmark’s most environmentally-friendly inventions, the largest solar cell facility in Scandinavia as well as huge windmills will be on display in the small suburb of the Danish capital.

DONG Energy is teaming up with new local windmill corporation Hvidovre Vindmøllelaug to install the three big windmills at Avedøre Holme. Erik Christiansen, a board member of the partnership, said the windmills will be installed on land, but a backup plan is in place to put them out at sea in summer 2009.

Although DONG Energy will finance the construction of the windmills, Hvidovre Vindmøllelaug will be able to obtain one of the windmills upon completion.
