China becomes global seafood giant

China is now the largest producer of seafood in the world, supplying some 35% of total global seafood products, according to the latest report by Nordic financial group Glitnir.

Glitnir, a leading global supplier of financial services to the seafood industry, released a new report today on China’s seafood industry. The report provides an overview of the main trends and developments in the Chinese seafood sector.

The research also shows that China is now the world leader in seafood product exports, with Japan accounting for almost half of its total seafood exports in recent years. Glitnir says that demand for high quality seafood in the Chinese market is set to continue to grow, due to increasingly affluent consumers, greater production capacity and the traditional popularity of seafood, particularly shellfish, in Asia.

The report was released at the Ocean of Opportunities seafood conference in Shanghai, China which takes place today. Glitnir has arranged for leading experts in the seafood industry to meet and discuss investment opportunites in China.
